MAY 2023 NEWSLETTER
Ready, Set, Give, to Gallatin County 4-H Foundation!
2023 GIVE BIG Event: May 4th - 5th

We are excited to share that Gallatin County 4-H Foundation is part of the Give Big Gallatin Valley event. This event is a unique and fun way to give to your local Gallatin Valley non-profits. Gallatin County 4-H Foundation is one of the many non-profits that are taking part.  You can preview our giving profile at Give to Gallatin County 4-H Foundation | Give Big Gallatin Valley 2023 (givebiggv.org).

What is Give Big?

It is 24 hours of community members, friends, and families near and far donating to their favorite non-profits.  It is an online giving platform so anyone anywhere can log in and donate.  It was created as a fun and useful way for non-profits to have a platform to receive donations.

Why Give Big?

There are many businesses that have donated prizes and money into a stretch pool.  So every non-profit that receives money during targeted timeframes could also receive an additional amount.  So target donations during their fun-themed hours! See prize opportunities for 4-H here.

How can you Give Big?

Starting at 6 pm on Thursday, May 4 you can go to https://www.givebiggv.org/organizations/gallatin-county-4-h-foundation to donate. The event ends at 6 pm Friday, May 5.  People can also stop by the Extension office and donate in person!

We hope that each of our 4-H Families can share this event and email with their friends, families, and colleagues. We also hope that our 4-H Families will also take a moment to donate.  The funds that the Gallatin County 4-H Foundation raises will go towards new projects and new clubs, scholarships to attend Montana 4-H Congress, the 4-H ambassador program, and higher education scholarships for Gallatin 4-H youth.

Montana 4-H invites all members 4-H age 13 and older, volunteers, and MSU Extension faculty and staff to the 2023 Montana 4-H Congress event on the Bozeman campus of Montana State University.

Congress offers both youth and adults a venue in which to learn, be challenged, and most of all, have a great time with their peers. Montana 4-Hers have been attending an event like Congress for decades. Congress has become an important tradition and is the signature event for the Montana 4-H Program. Its purpose is to provide a safe and fun environment for youth to experience all that 4-H Congress has to offer including: contests, workshops, entertainment, social events, and much more.

Gallatin Beef Producers Association Scholarship
**Attention graduating class of 2023! Take advantage of this local scholarship opportunity.

The Gallatin Beef Producers Association will award scholarship funds to one or more qualified students attending Montana State University for the 2023/2024 academic year in the amount of $1,000.

To apply please complete the application: 2023 GBP Scholarship. Applicants will need to provide an essay and TWO letters of recommendation. Email applications and materials to gallatinbeefproducers@gmail.com - Deadline is June 1, 2023.

The Gallatin Beef Producers Association has made it their mission to provide opportunities and scholarships to local students in agriculture. Since 2007, they have provided over $83,000 to students and agricultural education efforts (4-H Beef Bred & Fed and Farm Fair to name a couple). Their Board of Directors recently formed their own scholarship committee to have more involvement in the scholarship selection process.

4-H Impact Survey

A national/state survey to measure the impact 4-H has on youth (13-18) was recently sent to families through Qualtrics by the Montana 4-H Center. The parent letter included in the email informs the parent or guardian of the study, requests their permission for their child to participate, and contains the survey link. The youth letter does not contain the survey link to prevent 4-H member participation without parental knowledge.

The goals of this study include: (1) To obtain data on 4‐H youth outcomes related to Positive Youth Development (PYD) through 4-H programming in the following areas: Civic Engagement, College and Career Readiness, Healthy Living and Science; and (2) To assess a youth’s experience as described by the 4-H Thriving Model of PYD. This data will be used both to report impact to National 4-H Council, stakeholders, and to make data-driven programming decisions. This is an annual cross-sectional study of individually enrolled 4-H members that will reveal important information to improve Montana 4-H. Areas for improvement may also be discovered for national 4-H efforts when data from all states is compiled.

We encourage you to participate in this study! Survey responses are due by May 15th.

Our next meeting is scheduled for 5/16/23, 6 pm - 8:30 pm at the MSU food lab located in room #120, Herrick Hall, located off of S 7th Avenue.  Look for the Signup Genius email to RSVP.  Make sure to reply to that so that we can plan accordingly.  Come prepared to get a little messy, have a ton of fun, and eat some delicious food prepared by you!

DOG (OBEDIENCE & AGILITY)

Dog Obedience:

We are a month into classes and everyone is doing amazing! Things are starting to come together for them and I hope some of you are noticing that at home.  All of the kids need to be working with their dogs at home because none of our commands will be mastered in the 45 minutes we spend together each week!!

We will have classes every Wednesday for the month of May EXCEPT on May 31.  Classes will run at our usual time 4:30-5:15. Come prepared to work inside or outside. If our weather ever cooperates, we will start going out as much as possible.

If you are interested in a private lesson with Ron get in touch with the office to get on his calendar ASAP! 406-388-4789  His time is limited and I don't want anyone to miss out on this great opportunity.

If you have any questions please don't hesitate to ask.

HORSE PROJECTS

We as the horse project have been invited to participate in a basket auction during the livestock auction. During the Livestock Sale of the fair we will have a "Horse Basket" promoting our project. Each animal project will have a basket, the proceeds from the baskets go back to each project. This gives individuals who are not able to purchase an animal the opportunity to be involved. We are looking for items to add to our basket ( per 4-H rules no alcohol) and a parent who is willing to take the lead. If you are interested please reach out to the horse committee, we would GREATLY appreciate it!

Also Jess would love to start a Horse Breeding project similar to the livestock breeding projects. If you are interested in this please reach out to Jess @ reininginmt05@gmail.com. You don't have to have a mare to breed as Jess has 3 that will be used for the project. But if you have a mare that you want to breed, this will be the place to start and learn. The project would go over genetics, choosing a stallion to fit your mare, the breeding process, and following the mare through her pregnancy.

We have lots of great workshops coming up, including a general horsemanship clinic on Saturday, May 6th at the fairgrounds. Please sign up on the Signup Genius links on the calendar 2 days prior to the Clinic. Sign up here:  22-23 Horse Events

If you have project, fair, or horsemanship questions or troubles, reach out to a committee member. We want to help by answering questions or pointing you in the right direction.

I want to show at the fair! GREAT, make sure you PREPARE FOR FAIR.

Here are a few things you need to do to prepare (see the paragraphs below for more information on these topics)

  1. Take care of the sponsorship fee for each participant/family. You can contact Toni for more information 406-539-3747.

  3. Make sure you have participated in a minimum of 2 clinics before the fair. Need to attend a clinic? Check out the schedule below for upcoming clinic offerings. *Check out the specific requirements for each project below.
  4. Look out for an email this month that will have sign-up information for the fair.

Please don't forget about your sponsorships and/or working concessions (only a few dates left). These need to be done right away if you want to participate at the Fair. The money from this helps pay for awards. You are also more than welcome to go talk to businesses and get sponsors that way.

Reminder..... Vaccinations need to be done as soon as possible. Please email in a copy of a receipt or vet paperwork and with the name of each horse that received the vaccine.

Fair - You will be receiving an email from the 4h office around mid May to sign up for Fair. Please make sure you have met your requirements before signing up. If you can't remember, please email us and we can help you figure it out.
