MARCH 2023 NEWSLETTER
Montana 4-H Volunteer Institute Recap

The Montana 4-H Volunteer Institute was held February 17-19 in Billings, MT. Gallatin County 4-H had five registered volunteers attend: Ginny Francis (Cake Decorating), Scott Francis (Shooting Sports), Jessie Sheperd (Horse/ULC), Lee Nuss (Swine) and Todd Kesner (Shooting Sports). Our volunteers attended various workshop sessions, networked with others from across the state, and learned valuable skills to bring back to our local program!

Lee Nuss was recognized at the Awards Banquet as the District 6 State 4-H Outstanding Lifetime Volunteer for his 10+ years of service to our program. He was presented his award by TWO former Gallatin 4-H Extension Agents, Kelton Jensen and Todd Kesner (both of which are now with the State 4-H office). Lee has had an incredible impact on our program over the years. He currently serves on the Gallatin County 4-H/FFA Market Livestock Committee, Market Sale Subcommittee, Swine Committee and is the 4-H Livestock Superintendent for the Gallatin County Fairgrounds. He is always the first to volunteer and the last to leave, ensuring everyone and everything is taken care of. Lee is reliable and sets a great example for other volunteers and the members he leads. Gallatin County 4-H is lucky to have him - Congratulations!

We highly encourage any and all volunteers to attend the Volunteer Institute next year!

Our club is based on the Horseless Horse project, but anyone interested in horses is welcome to join.

Our club met on January 31. We discussed upcoming field trips. Abi Burrows and Terra Gallagher put together a presentation about horse behavior. We learned about the body language a horse shows with different feelings. We also played a game like Charades where we acted out the different behaviors. It's not easy to be a horse! On February 20, we toured Montana Equine Medical and Surgical Center in Three Forks. We got to see a cross-sectioned horse leg, a horse skeleton, surgery room, intensive care unit, x-ray and ultrasound machines, and other areas of the facility. Hetty, a vet technician, gave us a lot of information about medical problems horses can have and how they treat them. We appreciate Montana Equine for letting us come!

3/11/23 WRH Signup

3/25/23 C2M/GH Signup via email to amymfree@gmail.com

Some of our venues have coggins and vaccine requirements.  The March 4th Horsemanship Clinic at Gallatin River Ranch is one of them.  Proof of vaccinations need to be emailed to the horse committee, gc4hhorse@gmail.com. Please include the member and horse's name in the subject line and attach a copy of your vaccination receipt, either from the vet or retailer where it was purchased, with the date administered and horse's names listed on the receipt. This must be submitted at least two days prior to the clinic. If you participated in the horse committee coggins testing in February, we will have your results.  If coggins testing was done at a different time please include the test results along with your proof of vaccination email.

Member sponsorships or sponsorship buy-outs of $50/member or $75/family are due at the end of March. You can pay via Venmo @GallatinCounty-HorseCommittee or contact Toni Berger at 406-539-3747 to drop off a check. This obligation can also be fulfilled through 4-H fundraising opportunities and designating the funds go to the horse committee. If your child secured a donation or sponsorship from a business, please be sure they write a thank you note and include a tax deductible donation form, available from the horse committee.  These sponsorships or buy-outs are important to cover the cost of putting on the horse show at the fair.  Each family planning to participate in the fair horse show is asked to fulfill this fundraising activity by the end of March.

Remember, all horse members must attend AQA workshops once as a junior and once as a senior. See newsletter for more info!

Horse Committee meetings are held on the third Monday at 6:30 pm at the Smart's residence every month. We welcome any parents who want to be involved and help shape the project!

Helmet Grant

The Bozeman Health Trauma program and Community Benefit Department recently obtained grant funding to help mitigate the occurrence of traumatic brain injury by way of providing helmets for the community! Their mission with this grant money is ultimately to reduce the burden of traumatic head injury! They hope to provide the community with helmets for those who need replacements, need some financial support to purchase safe helmets, and overall encourage the idea that helmets are cool and helpful for our safety 🙂 They ultimately, want the community to know that they care about your brain, and that they can be a resource for helping people obtain helmets. If your child is in need of a helmet and would like to be considered for grant funds, please send us an email with the number of helmets needed for your family.
