Thank You for a  MAGICAL year!

Gallatin County 4-H celebrated the end to our MAGICAL 2024-2025 4-H Year with our annual awards banquet this past weekend. We acknowledged 4-H youth members who excelled in various projects areas and recognized numerous 4-H volunteers who have made a positive impact on our organization!

Thank you to the 675 youth members and 138 volunteers (255 were in attendance at the banquet) for being a part of the MAGIC of Gallatin County 4-H this year. Why do we fundraise in 4-H?

Fundraising is an essential part of how 4-H operates and thrives. Fundraising and financial management are some of the life skills 4-H strives to teach youth. By participating in fundraisers, you are directly contributing to the growth and success of 4-H, ensuring that we can continue to provide valuable opportunities for youth development and community engagement.

  • Program Support: Fundraisers help cover the costs of the many programs and activities that make 4-H so impactful. This includes purchasing supplies for science experiments, art projects, agricultural activities, and more. Without fundraising, many of these valuable programs would not be possible.
  • Youth Development Opportunities: Fundraising allows us to offer scholarships, grants, and financial assistance to 4-H members. This ensures that all youth, regardless of their financial situation, can participate fully in 4-H and take advantage of its opportunities.
  • Community Engagement: Fundraising events are more than just a way to raise money; they are also a way to engage with the community. These events help raise awareness about 4-H, build community support, and foster a sense of unity and involvement among members, volunteers, and supporters.
  • Enhanced Experiences: The funds raised go towards enhancing the 4-H experience for all members. This can include funding for field trips, special guest speakers, advanced training sessions, and other enrichment activities that provide valuable learning experiences.
  • Volunteer Support: Fundraisers help cover the cost of essential volunteer background screenings, ensuring a safe and supportive environment for our youth. They also provide funds for basic club supplies, which are necessary for the smooth operation of club meetings and activities.
  • Recognition and Celebration: Fundraising helps pay for events like the annual awards banquet, where we celebrate the achievements of our 4-H members and volunteers. This recognition is important for motivation and morale, highlighting the hard work and dedication of everyone involved.
  • Sustainability: Consistent fundraising efforts ensure the long-term sustainability of 4-H programs. By generating funds regularly, we can plan ahead, expand our programs, and continue to provide high-quality experiences for our members year after year.

Help Raise Money for your 4-H Project or Club

We have the AMAZING opportunity to continue to work MSU Concessions and this has become a GREAT way to raise money for 4-H club/project activities! Please see the link below for the 2025 Fundraising concessions events at MSU! We frequently commit to events throughout the year as they arise and update the SignUp Genius accordingly.

What does working MSU Concessions entail?

All food is made and prepped by MSU Culinary/Concessions staff, 4-H members/parents just simply sell and serve it out of one of the concessions stands on MSU Campus (Stadium or Fieldhouse depending on the event). This is a super easy, fun and quick way to make money for your Clubs/Projects and gain some skills in the service industry! A Stand Leader and MSU Concessions staff will train you on the spot with what you need to know - No experience necessary!

2025-2026 MSU Concessions Fundraising SignUp:

Fundraising: 4-H Concessions Fundraising Opportunities

If club/project members sign up for an event as a group, your club/project will get ALL the tips and a percentage of the profits from that event. If multiple projects/clubs sign up for the same game, then the tips and profits will be split between the groups. So, we highly encourage you to gather up your members, pick a game/event that your club/project will work as one group to maximize the amount of money you will earn!

Depending on the event, the day/time/hours will vary and depending on our concessions stand location, the number of people we will need per game will vary. We will need a combination of youths (minimum age of 10 with parent accompaniment) and teens/adults (ages 15+) to run cash registers.

If you have any questions, please contact the 4-H Office

Shooting Sports Leader Training

Our Gallatin 4-H Shooting Sports projects serve over 170 youth every year and with another 4-H Year right around the corner, we are always looking to recruit more 4-H Shooting Sports Volunteers! Shooting Sports is a safe, fun and challenging activity that can become a lifelong passion to be shared with the family. The safe and responsible use of firearms and archery equipment is the primary focus of the 4-H Shooting Sports program. Youth members will improve marksmanship skills, have the opportunity to compete, and learn self-discipline and personal responsibility.

ALL 4-H shooting sports volunteers must attend a State Training workshop and become certified in a shooting discipline before serving as project leaders and volunteers. Project disciplines include: Air Pistol, Small Bore Pistol (.22), Air Rifle, Small Bore Rifle (.22), Archery, Shotgun, Muzzleloading, Hunting, and Western Heritage.

To be a certified leader in the State of Montana, the following must be satisfied:

  1. Be at least 21 years of age.
  2. Be enrolled as a leader in their respective County. Passed a background check and successfully completed the Montana 4-H Volunteer Training Modules.
  3. All training attendees must complete the four National 4-H Shooting Sports modules on Z-Suites to be certified at the end of the practicum day. The code for Z-Suites will be shared with the folks that sign up to take the trainings.
  4. Be trained and certified in any discipline(s) that they are teaching at the county level.
  5. Participants must attend the entire training and successfully complete all aspects to receive their respective discipline certification.
  6. Certification is good for seven (7) years. If the discipline is not taught in the first 2 years, the course must be retaken.

UPCOMING LEADER TRAINING OPPORTUNITY:

UNLIMITED LEADERS COUNCIL (ULC)

The primary purpose of the Unlimited Leaders Council (ULC) is to provide guidance and assistance to the county Extension staff in planning and conducting educational programs. Gallatin County Unlimited Leaders Council is the governing body of Gallatin County 4-H and all the committees within the county 4-H program.

ULC meets the first Tuesday of every month, with our next meeting on

October 7th at 6pm at the Extension Office.

🌟 Gallatin County 4-H ULC Meeting Highlights – September 2025

The Unlimited Leaders Council met on September 2nd at the Gallatin County Extension Office, where President Monika Johnson welcomed attendees and guest speaker Nicole Berger, a National 4-H Shooting Sports Ambassador. Nicole shared her summer leadership experience and offered to present at local clubs. Club leaders reach out to Nicole to come present - she has so much to share with your members!!!

Extension Agent Molly Yurdana announced upcoming events including Family Information Night (Sept 24) and Orientation Night (Nov 3), and emphasized volunteer needs for projects like Cooking, Cake Decorating, Robotics, and Welding. Youth reports celebrated a successful fair, strong Congress participation, and a well-run summer camp.

The council discussed newsletter deadlines, board vacancies, and ways to improve volunteer engagement following low turnout at the Manhattan Potato Festival. Planning is underway for the Awards Celebration on September 28th, themed “Magic of 4-H,” with over 200 RSVPs.

Enrollment for the 2025–2026 year opens October 1st and closes January 15th. A haybale display contest was proposed for National 4-H Week (Oct 5–11). Financial motions led to an approved increase in youth enrollment and late fees, while a proposed increase in MSU Concessions revenue share was declined.

Committee updates covered fundraising, summer camp logistics, shooting sports goals, and fair rubric revisions. The next ULC meeting is scheduled for October 7 at 6:00 PM.

New to 4-H? Not sure what club fits your style? Register for your projects under

“Member at Large” when completing your 4-H Enrollment Clubs page on ZSuite.

Participating in a specific 4-H club is not a requirement to participate in 4-H projects, but Clubs provide members a great opportunity to get more involved with their communities, leaders, and group activities.

We encourage members to join one of our clubs listed above!

Gateway Challengers Club

Meetings take place the second Monday of each month at the Gallatin Gateway Community Center (145 Mill St., Gateway) from 6:30- 8:00 p.m.

Looking forward to our new 4-H year: Enrollment for the 2025-2026 4-H year begins on October 1 (closes on October 31, after that you get a late fee). Don’t forget to re-enroll, you have to sign up again each year.

We hope you’ve had a good year in 4-H and will come back to join us for more adventures, especially in our Gateway club. If you had a not-so-great experience, please reach out and let us know what you struggled with, if you feel so inclined. Not every project has the same kind of leadership, and some independent projects are difficult to manage on your own at home, even with the best of intentions. Also, don’t be discouraged if you didn’t complete a project, you can try again, or try something else, and not everyone goes to fair. We want you to know that you’re not a failure if things didn’t turn out so well!

Also, remember that if you don’t have time to come to club, you don’t have to be in a club to be a 4-H member, even if it asks you when you enroll. You can choose to be a “member-at-large” instead, which may be a better fit for you, and you won’t get so many emails and texts from a club leader. :)

Finally, our new 4-H year kicks off at club on Monday, October 13, at 6:30 p.m. at the Gallatin Gateway Community Center.

The 2025-2026 Montana 4-H Fall Leadership Training event will be held Friday, November 7th – Sunday, November 9th at the Copper King Hotel in Butte. Fall Leadership Training is the annual leadership development retreat for county 4-H Ambassadors and Teen Leaders. This is a peer-to-peer leadership training – facilitated by our newly elected MT 4-H State Officer Team! The majority of the event workshops are created by teens, for teens.

Teens will leave the weekend prepared and excited to take the knowledge and skills they have gained and apply them in their counties. It is also a great place to have youth leaders exchange ideas and create a statewide network of resources.

Registration will be $195 per person and includes lodging (4 to a room), Saturday and Sunday meals, and program costs. Learn more about this event here: https://www.montana.edu/extension/4h/programs_and_events/events/fall_training/index.html

In my free time, I run a small baking business that specializes in cakes and cupcakes. I’m thrilled to take on this new challenge as your leader and can’t wait to get started.

CAMP COUNSELOR PROJECT

REMINDERS & UPDATES FOR THE NEW 4-H YEAR:
  1. The 2024-2025 4-H year was the LAST year that 13 year olds were allowed to serve as Camp Counselors. Beginning this 4-H Year (2025-2026), youth must now be 14 years old and older (age as of Oct. 1st) to serve as a Camp Counselor. Camp Counselor applications will be released with Enrollment in October and due Nov. 1st for those age-eligible and interested. Interviews will be early December.
  2. BE AWARE that in 2025-2026 we will be CAPPING the camp counselor project to 25 Counselors (including E-Board counselors). We need a more manageable group size and the most dedicated, youth-service driven teens to serve as our counselors.
  3. In 2025-2026 we will also be trying out a recurring meeting date/time for the sake of consistency and commitment to the project. We will meet the fourth Sunday of each month (January - May) from 1pm-4pm at the 4-H Office. The longer meeting timeframe will allow for more training to be incorporated, with plenty of time to plan/prep workshops and committee work each month.

KNITTING/CROCHET PROJECTS

**This Project will be capped at 15 youth members.

Welcome knitters and crocheters, new members as well as returning! This year we have new leaders: Kim and Kate (the Newbies) and Bonnie Radke (4-H Alumni, Former Teen Leader and Ambassador).

We are seeking additional volunteer leaders, so if you know of anyone who knits or crochets who would like to help in this awesome group, even if on a single meeting basis, please let us know. Some of our senior knitters or crocheters might be a great help as mentors to the group, so consider that if you think you might be interested.

Returning members, please bring your Fair project or any project you are currently working on and New members, bring ideas for your goals and what you are hoping to create this year. All members, please bring your Project Books so we can begin filling them out together.

The 4-H archery project begins on December 7th and will conclude in March after the state shoot. Shooting times will be on Sunday afternoon between 1 and 5pm at Big Sky Archery in Four Corners. Watch for a sign up genius in late November for exact shooting times.

If you are new to the project, don’t worry about archery equipment at this time, 4-H has plenty of bows to get you started.  If you are a continuing shooter, keep practicing and we’ll see everyone in December.

Randy Radke, Brian Marassi, Mike Prester, Travis Earl, Jake Noonan and Paul Smart are the current co-archery leaders. We are hoping to get a couple of other volunteers trained in December.  Anyone who would like to help facilitate please reach out to Randy at gv4harchery@gmail.com. We need both volunteers that like to shoot, those that know 4-H leadership  and who can just help organize.

    CAT PROJECT

Happy Autumn to all of our new and returning Gallatin County 4-H members!  The Cat Project, like last year, will be hoping to meet on the 1st Wednesday of each month at 5:30pm at Alpenglow Animal Hospital at 2401 Riata Rd, Bozeman, in the middle of Baxter Meadows West Housing Development. Meetings will start on November 5th, since October 1st is when 4-H projects open for enrollment and it may leave everyone scrambling.  We will still try to have dinner available as I know how tough this time frame can be in the middle of the week for us parents.

This year, we will not be having a January Meeting (and December may be a small/short one), as we have found attendance to be very low during the holidays. We would also welcome any members or parents/adults to give a short talk/demonstration or lesson as one of the meetings so we can learn from a variety of other cat enthusiasts this year! If kids can also bring their records books to meetings, we can set aside 5-10 min each time for filling out our 4-H calendar of events.

We are hoping to have lots of fun this year learning all about cats and taking care of them!

**This Project will be capped at 40 youth members. Youth members must be at least 8 years old (age as of Oct. 1st) to participate.

    Hello Everyone!

My name is Jen and I will be the new leader for Obedience and continue my role as the leader for Agility, either way I wanted to introduce myself.

It is hard to believe that fall is here! Remember that October 1st marks the first day for open registration so get on it registered to ensure that you get your spot! Last month we had an event at the Ace Owenhouse Downtown for their Dog Day event. We had a great time showing off our skills and allowing others to try out the agility obstacles.

The month of October will start our series of extra seminars! These seminars, with a short paragraph describing something interesting you learned at it, can be used as an activity for your activity book.

    • The first one will be held at Montana Murray Kennels on Wednesday, October 29th at 5pm. We will be completing a kennel tour, describing daily kennel routine and kennel tech duties as well as answering questions you may have. The kennel is located at 25 Dollar Drive in Belgrade. This tour and informational session will last about 45 minutes to an hour.
    • In the month of November, we will have a grooming seminar on Wednesday, November 19th. Details to come.

Finally, I want to invite you all to Montana Murray Kennels' Halloween Pack walk. This will be held on Saturday, October 25th from 8:30am to 11:30am. This will include a doggie haunted house, doggie photo booth, treat bags, snacks and a costume contest! Be sure to get yourself and pup a costume, matching or not, and join us for a fun celebration

For dog agility and dog obedience we will start our dog practices in the spring at Montana Murray Kennels at 25 Dollar Drive in Belgrade. I believe that both projects are going to be held on Wednesdays but I have yet settle on time/times until I have numbers. With that said it would be between 4 and 6pm I believe when the sessions would be.

If you have any questions or concerns, please reach out to me! I look forward to this new 4-H year!

POULTRY PROJECT - Market or Breed/Show

Welcome to the new 4-H year! We are excited to get the new year going and welcome our new and returning members.

The Poultry Project will meet once per month generally on the second Thursday of the month. Our workshops usually begin at 6:30pm and run until 8:00 or 8:30pm. 4-H members from Cloverbud age to age 18/19 are welcome to join the project.

Our first workshop of the year will be held on Thursday, October 9, 2025 and we will be meeting at the 4-H office from 6:30pm to 8:00pm.  We will have a question and answer session and plan on starting to learn more about poultry with fun games lead by our youth members!

We will also be working the MSU Football Concessions for the Poultry Project on Saturday, October 11, 2025.  If you are available to help with this annual fundraising event please let Shawna know as soon as possible. We will need several youth and adults to help with this fundraising opportunity. However, the minimum age for the youth is 10 with parent accompaniment for this event.

4-H members from last year's poultry market program and any other members interested are welcome to come join with our community service event coming up on October 18, 2025 from 1pm to 3pm. We will be assisting the Montana Veterans Meat Locker with their Belgrade meat giveaway at the Stockman Bank parking lot in Belgrade.  Any questions regarding this event please reach out to Judy Brownell at 406-580-1289.
