2024-2025 4-H Project Award Nominations
Project Nomination letters were mailed out at the end of July to 4-H youth who have been nominated for 2025 4-H Project Award(s), so CHECK YOUR MAIL! **If you receive this letter, please make sure to follow the listed requirements and re-turn in your updated Record Book(s) back to the 4-H Office for one more review by Friday, September 5th by 5pm. With both record-keeping and interview skills being equally important to develop in our youth, the two areas were scored and totaled to determine award nominees. Members that scored 110 total points (85%) or higher were nominated to be considered for a Project Award(s). *Please note that nomination does not guarantee an award.
Even if you don’t get nominated, please remember that record keeping and interview skills are some of the many life skills we are teaching youth in 4-H. Practicing keeping accurate and updated records and speaking to an adult about your learning experiences will help in your future projects and when applying for jobs/scholarships/college. Be sure to still update your records books with all your project information/financial records/ribbons/etc. up through the current date to “close out” your records for this 4-H Year.

To be eligible for this award, youth of ANY AGE (8+) can fill out the Achievement Journal document for the with the current 4-H year activities (UPDATEDGallatinCountyAchievementJournal-fillable.pdf) to the best of their ability and turn it in to our office by Friday, September 12th by 5pm.

Market Livestock Sale Checks, Indoor Silent Auction Payout & Premium Award Money
We estimate that checks will be available no later than October 1st. We will communicate if there are any additional delays beyond our control to the best of our abilities.
- NEW Check Dispersal Policy: Exhibitors will be notified via email when Market Sale, Indoor Silent Auction and Premium Award Checks are available. Checks will no longer be mailed and all 4-H/FFA Exhibitors will be required to pick up their checks at the 4-H Office. When picking up your checks, you will be asked to “sign out” your checks signifying that you have received them.
Award Premiums:
- Fair Ribbon Premiums are not paid for market classes, carcass evaluations or animal educational tests/posters. Livestock educational poster entries are divided into junior and senior divisions in each species. The top 5 posters in each division will receive Blue Rosette ribbons and premiums. All other posters will not receive ribbons or premiums.
- Premiums are paid per ribbon color for Showmanship, Breed classes and specialty classes per the prices below:
- White $2.00
- Red $3.00
- Blue $4.00
- Purple Flat $5.00
- Pink Rosette $6.00
- Purple Rosette $8.00
- Blue Rosette $10.00 (livestock educational posters only)
Market Sale Checks:
- **As a reminder, a 5% commission is deducted from the sale price of each market sale animal to pay sale expenses and operating fees. This commission covers but is not limited to the following: Livestock Judge, Buyers BBQ, Insurance coverage, Trucking fees of animals, Auctioneers, Online Sale Platform, Marketing and Advertising prior to sale, Thank you Tab publication after the fair, Equipment and Supplies for the sale, Tax fees, and Donation to Higher Education Scholarships for 4-H youth.
- The 5% commission will also be deducted from all add-ons. All Market Swine will be deducted a rate of $0.35 per every $100 of the sale price to cover the Pork Checkoff Fees. For example, if you sell a market hog for $2,000, you would multiply that amount times 0.0035 (2000 x 0.0035 = $7.00). The 5% commission does NOT apply to Indoor Silent Auction items.
- Please remember to thank your Buyers and those who generously gave you add-ons, as they are the ones that make this opportunity possible for the kids.

Thank you - Bozeman Stampede
Thank you to those who signed up to help with the 2025 Bozeman Stampede rodeo in August! This has become a huge fundraiser for Gallatin 4-H thanks to the generous support and monetary donations of the Stampede. We do not know the exact dollar amount the Stampede will give 4-H each year. In years past they have generously given us program-wide donations on top of what we actually worked for – but we do not want to count on that, nor guarantee an exact rate/amount. They are
sharing their profits with us because they support and believe in 4-H and our mission, any amount they choose to provide us will be appreciated.
Many hands make light work, so THANK YOU to those who carved out some time in their busy summer schedules to help.

MARK YOUR CALENDARS!
Enrollment for the new 4-H Year opens on October 1st, 2025
4-H ENROLLMENT POLICY UPDATE:
Our county 4-H program enrollment policy has been updated and our enrollment window will open October 1st and will now close January 15th (previously March 1st) – which means ALL youth and volunteers MUST be enrolled in 4-H and any/all projects they plan to participate in no later than January 15th, especially if planning to participate in the Fair in that project area.
RETURNING 4-H Youth Members and Volunteers will re-enroll through their existing ZSuite account and re-select your projects and clubs for the new 4-H Year.
BE SURE to update any mailing addresses, parent AND youth emails, phone numbers and/or medical information at this time.**Please re-enroll
by October 31 to avoid late fees and to ensure you are included on emails, meeting announcements and newsletter mailing list.
NEW 4-H Youth Members technically have all the way until January 15th to join our county 4-H program.
However, the earlier the better to ensure they can take full advantage of program offerings, New 4-H Family Orientations, project orientations, club elections and get in before projects fill up!
As always, starting November 1st, a per month late fee will be added to the enrollment fee. Some Clubs and Projects have enrollment caps and may close prior to January 15th. Enrollment fees are to be paid annually, plus non-refundable per project materials fees.
Reasoning for Policy Change: Gallatin County 4-H has one of the longest enrollment windows in comparison to other Montana 4-H county programs. This has allowed for as much accommodation, flexibility and "trickle in" of new and returning families as possible. Enrolling early and participating in as much as possible in our program is really important. The later you join, the more you miss out on. We have an on-boarding New 4-H Family Orientation in October/November of each year that covers crucial information for our program as a whole, deadlines, and requirements. Many clubs and projects also have orientation meetings and important information pertinent to a successful project is given in the first few meetings. 4-H is a big commitment and we want to be sure our youth and parents are set up for success from the start. Our program is run entirely by volunteers and if we continue to allow late enrollments past our deadlines, it is much harder for the volunteers to catch those newcomers up to the rest of the group.

- New 4-H Family Orientation for those new families who officially join our 4-H program for the 2025-2026 4-H Year to dive more in depth to the logistics and requirements of our 4-H program to set them up for success for their 1st year!
- Monday, November 3rd at 6pm at the Gallatin County Fairgrounds Exhibit Building #4 (901 N. Black Ave, Bozeman)

We encourage volunteers of all types (project leaders, club leaders, general volunteers) to attend for a great weekend of networking, learning and recognizing the efforts and impacts volunteers make in the Montana 4-H program. Event agenda and workshop sessions - COMING SOON!

Please register first through ZSuite and then fill out this form and email it back to gallatin4h@montana.edu as soon as possible. ULC will determine and approve funding amounts per volunteer with consideration on how many volunteers attend.
- Workshop Proposals Needed: We need you to share your knowledge with other volunteers across Montana. Volunteers are welcomed and encouraged to submit a proposal to teach a workshop at the volunteer institute. Some ideas are club management, leadership, teaching specific 4-H projects, and working with teens to name a few. It could even be a topic/skills that you do as a career (example counseling, teacher, accountant, vet, etc.). Please use this link to submit a proposal.

Shooting Sports Volunteers Needed + State Training Opportunity
Calling 4-H parents!!
Our Gallatin 4-H Shooting Sports projects serve over 170 youth every year and with another 4-H Year right around the corner, we are always looking to recruit more 4-H Shooting Sports Volunteers! Shooting Sports is a safe, fun and challenging activity that can become a lifelong passion to be shared with the family. The safe and responsible use of firearms and archery equipment is the primary focus of the 4-H Shooting Sports program. Youth members will improve marksmanship skills, have the opportunity to compete, and learn self-discipline and personal responsibility.
All 4-H shooting sports volunteers must attend a State Training workshop and become certified in a shooting discipline before serving as project leaders and volunteers. Project disciplines include: Air Pistol, Small Bore Pistol (.22), Air Rifle, Small Bore Rifle (.22), Archery, Shotgun, Muzzleloading, Hunting, and Western Heritage.
To be a certified leader in the State of Montana, the following must be satisfied:
- Be at least 21 years of age.
- Be enrolled as a leader in their respective County. Passed a background check and successfully completed the Montana 4-H Volunteer Training Modules.
- All training attendees must complete the four National 4-H Shooting Sports modules on Z-Suites to be certified at the end of the practicum day. The code for Z-Suites will be shared with the folks that sign up to take the trainings.
- Be trained and certified in any discipline(s) that they are teaching at the county level.
- Participants must attend the entire training and successfully complete all aspects to receive their respective discipline certification.
- Certification is good for seven (7) years. If the discipline is not taught in the first 2 years, the course must be retaken.
UPCOMING STATE TRAINING OPPORTUNITY:
The Montana 4-H Center is hosting a Shooting Sports Leader Training in Dillon, MT on September 12-14, 2025. This is an opportunity for volunteers to get TWO certifications in ONE weekend. Please see the attached agenda and information for the Z-Suites National 4-H Shooting Sports Modules. The cost of the State Training is $75.00/discipline, but Gallatin 4-H Shooting Sports side accounts will cover the cost for you once registered.
Montana 4-H Shooting Sports Training - Dillon - 2025 Registration: https://4h.zsuite.org/event-registrations/41142. If you will be a NEW volunteer in general, please contact us at the Gallatin 4-H Office first so we can help you create your ZSuite Volunteer account first.

Earn Money for your 4-H Project or Club
We have the AMAZING opportunity to continue to work MSU Concessions and this has become a GREAT way to raise money for 4-H club/project activities! Please see the link below for the 2025 Fall Fundraising concessions events at MSU! We frequently commit to events throughout the year as they arise and update the SignUp Genius accordingly.
What does working MSU Concessions entail?
All food is made and prepped by MSU Culinary/Concessions staff, 4-H members/parents just simply sell and serve it out of one of the concessions stands on MSU Campus (Stadium or Fieldhouse depending on the event). This is a super easy, fun and quick way to make money for your Clubs/Projects and gain some skills in the service industry! A Stand Leader and MSU Concessions staff will train you on the spot with what you need to know - No experience necessary!
2025-2026 MSU Concessions Fundraising SignUp:
Fundraising: 4-H Concessions Fundraising Opportunities
If club/project members sign up for an event as a group, your club/project will get ALL the tips and a percentage of the profits from that event. If multiple projects/clubs sign up for the same game, then the tips and profits will be split between the groups. So, we highly encourage you to gather up your members, pick a game/event that your club/project will work as one group to maximize the amount of money you will earn!
Depending on the event, the day/time/hours will vary and depending on our concessions stand location, the number of people we will need per game will vary. We will need a combination of youths (minimum age of 10 with parent accompaniment) and teens/adults (ages 15+) to run cash registers.
If you have any questions, please contact the 4-H Office
gallatin4h@montana.edu

AMBASSADORS / TEEN LEADERSHIP
Hello Teen Leaders & Ambassadors🍀
Thank you for a great year! We were an incredibly active group this year, with club appearances, teaching county-wide workshops, media appearances, dances and more! I am planning on leading this project again this upcoming 4-H Year and am actively working to improve the project meetings. I am also planning to implement the same Ambassador Team application/interview process for those interested in that opportunity. Stay tuned for updates!
Plans for September:
- Historically, the Teen Leaders have helped at the end-of-year Gallatin 4-H Awards Celebration, announcing youth awards, handing out prizes, and providing entertainment for the afternoon. I would love to have you all involved in the planning and presentation of the awards celebration again this year. I want YOU to take the lead on planning the script, flow, program, decorations, and hype. The 2025 Awards Celebration is scheduled for Sunday, September 28th at 2pm-4:30pm (your commitment would be 12pm-5pm that day – see attached Save the Date). We will gather as a Leadership team to brainstorm and assign duties.
- Next Teen Leadership Project Meeting – to plan end-of-year 4-H Awards Celebration
- Wednesday, September 10th 6pm – 8pm @ 4-H Office
Mark Your Calendars:
The 2025-2026 Montana 4-H Fall Leadership Training event will be held Friday, November 7th – Sunday, November 9th at the Copper King Hotel in Butte. Fall Leadership Training is the annual leadership development retreat for county 4-H Ambassadors and Teen Leaders. This is a peer-to-peer leadership training – facilitated by our newly elected MT 4-H State Officer Team! The majority of the event workshops are created
by teens,
for teens. Teens will leave the weekend prepared and excited to take the knowledge and skills they have gained and apply them in their counties. It is also a great place to have youth leaders exchange ideas and create a statewide network of resources. Registration will be $185 per person and includes lodging (4 to a room), Saturday and Sunday meals, and program costs. Learn more about this event here: https://www.montana.edu/extension/4h/programs_and_events/events/fall_training/index.html

CAMP COUNSELOR PROJECT
Counselors - THANK YOU for an
OUT OF THIS WORLD Camp! We are so proud of all of you. 9 months of planning, meetings, fundraising, workshop practice, etc. and it was a huge success. Thank you for working hard, stepping up, working together and through challenges, late nights and early mornings, being flexible with changes and putting on a good experience for the kids. We appreciate your enthusiasm, your singing (although sometimes pitchy), your humor (sometimes twisted), your energy, and trust. We’re always working to improve the camp counselor project experience and the camp as a whole. I welcome any and all feedback as we start planning for this upcoming 4-H year. Thanks again and enjoy the rest of your summer! We will have our annual “camp wrap-up” meeting sometime within the next month to debrief, discuss what went well, and improvements for next year.
REMINDERS & UPDATES FOR THE NEW 4-H YEAR:
- The 2024-2025 4-H year was the
LAST year that 13 year olds were allowed to serve as Camp Counselors. Beginning this upcoming 4-H Year (2025-2026), youth must be 14 years old and older (age as of Oct. 1st) to serve as a Camp Counselor. Camp Counselor applications will be released with Enrollment in October and due Nov. 1st for those age-eligible and interested. Interviews will be early December.
- BE AWARE that in 2025-2026 we will be CAPPING the camp counselor project to 25 Counselors (including E-Board counselors). We need a more manageable group size and the most dedicated, youth-service driven teens to serve as our counselors.
- In 2025-2026 we will also be trying out a recurring meeting date/time for the sake of consistency and commitment to the project. We will meet the fourth Sunday of each month (January - May) from 1pm-4pm at the 4-H Office. The longer meeting timeframe will allow for more training to be incorporated, with plenty of time to plan/prep workshops and committee work each month.

CAT PROJECT
We had 6 of our cat project members show their cats at the fair this year under Judge Dr. Stephanie Ninnemann from Jackson, WY. The kids (and their cats!) all did a phenomenal job- our judge was especially looking for a confident introduction from each member, ability to answer questions about their cat, and a solid "thank you" at the end of their time showing. Several members also did great educational posters. Congratulations to Remi Neil for her 2nd consecutive 4-H Fair Cat Show Grand Championship with her kitty "Champ!"
We are looking forward to another great year of all things "cat" for our project- if anyone has any fun contacts in our community who may enjoy speaking at one of our meetings or leading the kids in a fun project (even doing more fun cat-themed decorations for the holidays), please let me know!

Happy Fall! If you have been nominated for a record book award, please don't forget to complete them and turn them in by the 5th. I look forward to seeing you at the awards banquet on the 28th.
- Shawnna (retiring Dog Obedience leader)
Hello Dog Obedience Members,
My name is Jen and I will be the new leader for Obedience and continue my role as the leader for Agility, either way I wanted to introduce myself. As we enter this month of September, we have a couple of opportunities to show off the dog projects. The first will be on Saturday, 9/13 from 11am to 2pm at Owen House Ace in Downtown Bozeman. We would have a little booth to potentially answer questions and take donations for our project as well as demo agility and obedience skills. If anyone is interested, please contact me ASAP, so we solidify details. The second opportunity that we have to showcase the dog projects will be at Dog Fest on Sunday, 9/21 from 1pm to 5pm off Love Lane by the YMCA. Again, we would have a booth and be able to demo agility as well as our obedience skills and again let me know if you are interested!
As a reminder, registration for the new year begins October 1st! I want to also put it out there that we will have our first extra workshop for the year in October and details will follow. We will try to have an extra workshop every month until June 2026.
For dog agility and dog obedience we will still meeting at Montana Murray Kennels at 25 Dollar Drive in Belgrade. I believe that both projects are going to be held on Wednesday but I have yet settle on time/times until I have numbers. With that said it would be between 4 and 6pm I believe when the sessions would be.
If you have any questions or concerns, please reach out to me! I look forward to this new 4-H year!

ARCHERY PROJECT
Project Notes: *Youth members must be at least 9 years old (age as of Oct. 1st) to participate.
The 4-H Archery project begins on December 7th and will conclude in March after the Montana 4-H State Shoot. Shooting times will be weekly on Sunday afternoons between 1 and 5pm at Big Sky Archery in Four Corners. Watch for a sign up genius in late November for exact shooting times. This project will be capped at 96 youth.
If you are new to the project, don’t worry about archery equipment at this time, 4-H has plenty of bows to get you started. If you are a continuing shooter, keep practicing and we’ll see everyone in December.
Randy Radke and Mike Prester are the current co-archery leaders. We are hoping to get a couple of other volunteers trained in December. Anyone who would like to help facilitate please reach out to Randy at gv4harchery@gmail.com. We need both volunteers that like to shoot, those that know 4-H leadership and who can just help organize.
