MAY 2025 NEWSLETTER
ANNOUNCEMENTS

πŸ€ GIVE BIG to Gallatin County 4-H Foundation!πŸ€

24-Hour Giving Event: May 1st - 2nd, 2025

Gallatin County 4-H Foundation will be a part of the 2025 Give Big Gallatin Valley event.  This event is a unique and fun way to give to local Gallatin Valley non-profits. The Gallatin County 4-H Foundation is one of the many non-profits that are taking part.

What is Give Big?

It is  24 hours of community members, friends, and families near and far donating to their favorite non-profits. It is an online giving platform so anyone anywhere can log in and donate.  It was created as a fun and useful way for non-profits to have a platform to receive donations.

Why Give Big?

The funds that Gallatin County 4-H Foundation raises through Give Big will directly benefit our local Gallatin County 4-H youth by providing higher education scholarships, financial support to new projects and clubs, and purchasing equipment/supplies (ex. Fair).

How can you Give Big?

Starting at 6pm on Thursday, May 1st 4-H supporters can go to Give to Gallatin County 4-H Foundation | Give Big Gallatin Valley 2025 to donate. The event ends just 24 hours later at 6pm on Friday, May 2nd.  Donors can also stop by the 4-H Extension office and donate in person!

Help us spread the word! View and SHARE our 4-H Give Big Facebook posts with friends, family, and co-workershttps://www.facebook.com/GallatinCounty4H/.

We also hope that our 4-H Families will consider donating. Any amount is appreciated and will make an impact on the future success of our youth program. The real success of Give Big Gallatin Valley will not be how much money we raise but the tremendous impact those dollars will have when nonprofits across our community put them to work!

Thank You President Cruzado

The Gallatin County 4-H Ambassador Team had the privilege of meeting with Montana State University President Dr. Cruzado to present her with gifts of appreciation on behalf of Montana 4-H and the Montanans for 4-H committee.
πŸ€πŸ€πŸ€
President Cruzado has been an incredible advocate for our land grant university and MSU Extension programs such as the 4-H. To recognize her leadership and 15 years of service as our university President, we were honored to present her with a 4-H scarf, 15-year 4-H Pearl Clover pin, and local 4-H merchandise. Thank you President Cruzado! #GoCats

The Ambassadors were grateful to have some time to chat with President Cruzado before she retires this June. It was a great opportunity for the teens to share details of their 4-H projects, future college/career plans, and their Page Program experiences. Ambassadors Wyatt and Bonnie served as Pages during the 2025 legislative session at the Capitol as a result of the Montana 4-H & Montanans for 4-H Legislative Breakfast and Citizenship Seminar event earlier this year.
2025 4-H/FFA EXHIBITOR FAIRBOOK

The 4-H/FFA Fairbook contains ALL the exhibitor rules, divisions and classes you can enter, and schedules for the 2025 4-H/FFA Fair.

This document is  CRUCIAL to navigating the next few months. You must reference and utilize the Fairbook when registering your exhibits and animal projects to ensure your register correctly.

We publish and frequently update Fair Information on our 4-H website here: https://www.montana.edu/extension/gallatin/4hfair.html

**By entering in the 4-H/FFA Fair, you signify you have read, understand and will abide by ALL the rules contained in the Fairbook - read carefully!

2025 4-H/FFA Fair Registration will

OPEN May 19th and CLOSE June 20th!

All youth planning to participate in the fair will have to register for Fair online via the  ShoWorks fair platform to be able to exhibit.

  • Fair Registration link and How-To-Register guides will be sent out in mid-May.
  • **Please note: Enrolling in 4-H back in Oct. 2024 – March 2025 on ZSuite  does not automatically register your child for Fair, ShoWorks is a separate website and database for Fair Registration specifically.
2025 4-H/FFA Fair Schedules

Wondering when your shows are? When your exhibits will be judged? What time to check-in and check-out? What about interviews?

CHECK OUT THE 2025 FAIR SCHEDULES FOR ALL THAT INFORMATION!
The 4-H/FFA Fair Schedules have been published to our Fair webpage here:

4-H/FFA families with reserved RV camping spots will be permitted to move onto the Fairgrounds beginning on Saturday, July 12th. All RVs must be in place by no later than Monday, July 14th at 6pm. RVs will be allowed to leave the grounds at any time starting Sunday, July 20th with attention to livestock transport trailers and load-out schedules.

REMINDER: Sunday Schedule

The 4-H/FFA Livestock Areas are closed to the public on the last Sunday (07/20) of the Big Sky Country State Fair. Trucks, semis and trailers will be moving through the livestock areas throughout the day, so to ensure the safety and wellbeing of the general public, exhibitors, and animals, the areas will be closed off from the rest of the Fair.

For mutual benefit of the Fairgrounds and 4-H/FFA exhibitors, Sunday will remain a processor load-out and barn clean-up day. 4-H/FFA market animals that are sold through the Market Livestock Sale are terminal projects intended for meat consumption. At the request of the meat processors, animals are to be transported to their final destinations beginning Sunday morning. All other 4-H/FFA animals will be released from Fair intermittently throughout Sunday at the discretion of each species.

Exhibitors are still required to be at the Fairgrounds for this day, as they are expected to care for their animals until release, help clean barns and assist species committees.

Important Update: 2025 Fair Concessions

There will be NO 4-H CafΓ© Concessions Stand at the 2025 Fair. The 4-H Concessions stand has been shut down due to broken pipes and other structural challenges, and we were unable to identify managers to run the fundraiser this year. There will be a food truck vendor set up in the livestock area that will be available to 4-H/FFA families during show days – please plan accordingly. We apologize for the inconvenience.

4-H Seeking Community Members to be Project Interview Judges

Gallatin County 4-H is seeking Judges to conduct interviews with 4-H youth exhibiting at the 2025 Big Sky Country State Fair. Judges will evaluate the 4-H members’ interview skills as well as their knowledge of their project. This is a great chance for the youth to share their knowledge, practice interviewing, reflect on their experiences, and present themselves and their accomplishments to a caring adult. We would like the judges to have some subject knowledge of the projects that they will be judging. We will have a short judge’s orientation before each shift to go over the judging rubrics and what to look for when conducting the interviews.

We are in need of interview judges on for livestock/small animal and horse projects on Thursday, July 10th and Friday, July 11th. Additionally, we are looking for judges for 4-H Indoor exhibits on Sunday, July 13th. Judges will review and score project exhibits and evaluate their interview skills during this time.

If interested, please fill out the Google Form:
https://forms.gle/RWjYTaVPCR7KGr2F7 by June 23rd indicating what time and project area(s) you would be comfortable judging.

Gallatin County 4-H thanks you for donating your time to make an impact on the youth members in our 4-H program. To show our appreciation, we will provide you with an admission ticket to the fair that can be used on any day from July 16th through July 20th.

Gallatin County Unlimited Leaders Council is the governing body of Gallatin County 4-H and all the committees within the county 4-H program.

Greetings from Gallatin County Unlimited Leaders Council (ULC)! We met on April 1st and the meeting was called to order at 6:11pm. We reviewed last month’s meeting minutes and financial reports. The minutes were approved with a noted correction and the Treasurer/Bookkeeper’s Report was approved as written. The Bozeman Stampede monies were discussed, and volunteer hours have been paid out to the respective club/project accounts.

The following information was presented by respective committee members:

  • The April Newsletter went out with the 2025 Fair schedule which includes a new Indoor Project Interview date on Sunday, July 13th to help minimize schedule conflicts for members.
  • Volunteer Appreciation Week had 23 nominated volunteers, and over the next two weeks these volunteers will receive coffee gift cards. All Volunteers will receive appreciation postcards in the mail.
  • The Gallatin Valley Farm Fair will be hosted by the Brainard Farm Fair and Ag Banquet LLC, and will take place on May 6, 7, and 8. There will be dairy goats, cows, and ice cream. They anticipate between 1,400 to 1,500 4th graders who will learn about agriculture and natural conservation. 4-H will have a booth at Farm Fair and hand out schwag such as pencils, stickers, etc.
  • Neighbor Day, June 14, 2025, will have Montana PBS work with local community organizations to provide a fun day of learning. Neighborhood organizations will have booths at the fairgrounds. Teen Ambassadors will be manning a 4-H booth and will have an educational activity.
  • Youth Reports given by Hazel and Danika gave a Rec Lab Recap: 183 youth attended from across the state including 14 teens from Gallatin County and 6 chaperones. Some of the liked workshops were rug making, horse whispering, and building a birdhouse. One of the community service projects was a tie blanket for Shodair.
    • Teen leaders will be making appearances at the Ora et Labora Club, leading AQA on April 12th, and they will be hosting the first Annual Clover Bash on May 2nd between 6pm-10 pm in Exhibit Building #4. From 6 to 7pm there will be dance lessons provided by the Teen Leaders and Camp Counselors. Families are welcome. There will be snacks, cotton candy, and decorations. Wear green!
    • Montana 4-H Congress will be held the week of July 6th (pre-Congress July 6-8 and Congress July 8-11). Members 13 years and older may attend Congress without competing. There will be many workshops. The theme is 4-H for Life. Registration opens in May 4-H May.
    • Summer Camp will be held between August 2nd through August 5th this year. Registration will start in May. The theme is β€˜Out of This World’ and will focus on space, science, etc. related type of workshops and fun!
  • Horse Committee Report was given by Ashley. A well-known horse person did a workshop for Working Ranch Horse. The kids were able to receive individual attention and the kids loved it. The horse person was very complimentary towards the 4-H participants. The next meeting will be on April 15.
  • Market Livestock Committee met March 12 and talked about community member vacancy and the need of tent sponsorships. Stampede banners will be hung this year to thank them for their support. The April meeting was supposed to be an Easter volunteer opportunity but changes happened. We played games outside and enjoyed ice cream/pizza party. We then had to reschedule our Montana Farmers Union presentation for next month.

Discussions from committees ended up with volunteer hours being set making flower boxes for the elderly, bowling May 17, MOR trip for education paid by MFU May 10. Still need more petting zoo help for Easter!

At our last meeting Dallas and Thomas Owens gave an excellent presentation about their poultry projects (picture below). AMBASSADORS / TEEN LEADERSHIP

Thank you to those of you who took advantage of our Teen Life Skill workshops in the month of April!

Gallatin 4-H teens had the opportunity to participate in a hands-on workshop focused on general maintenance of a vehicle; oil changes, fluid checks, tire changes, and battery swaps. Many are new drivers, so it is important that they understand how to troubleshoot and service basic car problems in case they or a community member need help on the side of the road. Thank you to MSU AgEd students Matt, Gus and Wallace for teaching our teens how to be self-sufficient, handy and safe on the road.

Every other spring semester Gallatin 4-H has the opportunity to partner with the Department of Agricultural & Technology Education, Montana State University. Undergraduate students select a Gallatin 4-H Club or Project area and learn to develop and lead a workshop for the youth. This brings fresh content and experiences to our 4-H program and provides undergrads hands-on teaching experience. Thank you MSU D.A.T.E for this continued partnership.

The Gallatin 4-H teen leadership project recently partnered with the MSU-Bozeman Department of Education for a life skills game night! Department Head, Tricia Seifert, has developed a college/career readiness BOARD GAME that aims to teach students about time management, balancing responsibilities and social life in an interactive format. Thank you to Tricia and Montana 4-H Specialist, Brett Schomer, for facilitating our game night!

Parents are welcome to stay and help or come back at the end.

Our last meeting will be: 5/5/25

I want to acknowledge all of the hard work both Krista and Katie have put into the baking project this year!! I have the easy job of sending emails, answering questions etc but they do all the leg work of coming up with the recipes that are age and time appropriate, shopping for all the ingredients and arriving very early to have all of it organized into stations for kids to start baking right away. Please, please take a minute to thank them for all their hard work and time committed to volunteering this year!

FAIR/RECORD BOOKS:

*Fair registration starts 5/19 on ShoWorks

*Information will be e-mailed from the extension office

*Please watch for an e-mail from me about the process as it relates to baking

*Judging for baking projects will happen on Sunday 7/13

*Record books need to be completed and turned in by 6/25 to be able to bring projects to fair.

*I am more than happy to answer questions about record books, fair registration, how fair works ect. Please just reach out via e-mail or phone!

Please watch for an e-mail shortly after each meeting with the recipes from the meeting to print if you would like them, and valuable links and reminders about 4-H record books and our baking project workbook.

CAT

We had a wonderful April meeting with the group, involving categorizing our cats into their general feline body types and veterinary physical examination of cats where we were all able to listen to heart sounds and even discussed some medical issues with some of our own cats.

The icing on the cake was our pasta bar, complete with homemade cream sauce (thank you, Neil family!) and great green salad (thank you, Sibson family!)!!!

Our May 7th meeting will be our last General cat project meeting before the fair in July.  We hope to do a community service project (still looking for creative ideas from members and their families) and likely a cat show judging practice for those who are interested in showing their cat at the fair this year. Those dates and times are to be determined.

Go cats (our β€œother” Gallatin county felines)!!!

CLOVERBUDS (AGES 5-7)

**This Project is FULL and is no longer taking new enrollments.

We will meet once a month at the fairgrounds in the evening from 5:30-7ish on the third Wednesday of each month.

In March and April we had our MSU student teachers, they planned the whole meeting and we learned about community helpers, plants, soil, good bugs and bad weeds, made kindness flowers, a giant "Thank You" note and played some fun games. It was very cool to have these awesome young ladies join us, they did such a good job planning a workshop as a class assignment!

Our next meeting will be Wednesday May 21st at 5:30pm at the Fairgrounds. We will have a family potluck to connect and reflect on the fun we had this year and also to help with some of the projects we need done to create our fair booth decor. We will also talk about fair registration.

I will also send an e-mail around the time fair registration opens (May 19th) with some explanation specific to Cloverbuds!

I will send an email a few days before our last meeting to remind you to join us if you can.

If you have questions please email Erin Neil at ehagmeier@gmail.com or 406-431-7205.

    POULTRY - Market or Breed/Show

Thank you to Moriah, Doug and Madison for being the workshop presenters at the April poultry workshop. At the April workshop, members learned about breeds, showmanship and played poultry trivia/games.

Our upcoming May workshop will be on May 8, 2025 at the Fairgrounds Building #4 from 6:30pm to 8:00pm. We will be having a guest speaker share about pigeons at this workshop.  Please plan to attend and remember you need three workshops attended prior to turning in your record book in June in order to show at the fair in July.  Also, all birds you are planning to show at fair should have been in your possession by May 1, 2025 (or on a confirmed delivery for the one market class only).  Any questions please contact one of the poultry leaders.

If you are enrolled in a 4-H/FFA livestock project and are planning to show and/or sell an animal at our Gallatin County 4-H/FFA Fair this upcoming summer, please read and sign the 2024-2025 Gallatin County Livestock Contract

This contract explains the livestock project workshop requirements, animal possession deadlines, expectations and other important fair information. This contract is MANDATORY if you are selling a market animal and is due by the possession date for your species (listed in Section 2 on the contract). *The Gallatin County Livestock Contract is in addition to any other species-specific contracts that your project leaders may give you.

    ROBOTICS

**This Project is FULL and is no longer taking new enrollments.

    Hello Robotics Crew!

Communication this year will primarily be through band, so I highly reccomend joining the band if you havent already. Join Here

**ALL MEETINGS WILL NOW BE HELD AT THE ANIMAL BIOSCIENCE BUILDING ON MSU CAMPUS (https://maps.apple.com/?ll=45.669273,-111.053263&q=Dropped%20Pin&t=h

For robotics 2 - here’s the link to the stuff to buy spreadsheet https://bit.ly/gv4hrpstb. We’ve already gone over this in meetings, but if there’s any other parts that need to be purchased, add them with the name in a different color to let me know they’re new, and I’ll place any new orders Monday.

For robotics 1 - if you’re looking for fun ways to play around with robotics over the weekend, the iRobot Coding app on iPhone (https://apps.apple.com/us/app/irobot-coding/id1524652548 ) and Android (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.rootrobotics.rootcoding&pcampaignid=web_share ). The reviews are mixed due to the app sometimes struggling to connect to a real Roomba, but the digital roomba simulator lets you play around with programming a virtual robot using drag and drop code blocks, and it works really well.

For both robotics 1 and 2, another fun game I’ve actually been playing myself is The Farmer Was Replaced on steam. It is $6.99, but I’ve found it to be well worth it, as the game (linked here: https://store.steampowered.com/app/2060160/The_Farmer_Was_Replaced/) lets you use a simple python style programming language to automate a relatively intricate agricultural system. The game does a very good job of holding your hand and explaining how all of the coding stuff works, but younger kids may benefit from a parent playing it with them at first to help with understanding some of the tutorial stuff.

          VET SCIENCE

Great to see everyone in attendance this month. Animal Vital Signs was our focus. Taking temperature, pulse rate, and respiration readings can help one to gauge an animal’s overall health. In general, abnormal readings in animal blood pressure, pulse rate, temperature, and vital signs would indicate a larger problem. Monitoring livestock vital signs can help an owner identify potential issues early so they can contact their veterinarian for further diagnosis. The veterinarian may also ask the owner to measure and report vital signs when they call for assistance in the event of an emergency, illness, or injury.

Our next meeting will be on Wednesday, May 21 (6-7pm) at the Gallatin County 4-H Office. We will cover Animal Wound Management. Wounds in animals come in different types and severity. They happen for various reasons and can be considered minor to severe in nature. Most wounds are general and can be considered a basic first-aid situation, while other wounds are considered traumatic, and are considered an emergency situation. For an animal owner to understand what to do with a wound, they must first understand what kind of wound their animal has sustained. It is important to also understand the healing process of wounds, and what the treatment options are.  All to be covered!

Note: Field trips are being finalized. Stay tuned in the Vet Science Band App for further details.
