🍀2024 Annual Report🍀

We are excited to share our Gallatin County 4-H 2024 Annual Report. It was another incredible year made possible by many members, volunteers, supporters and donors!

State Shoot Help Needed

The Montana 4-H Shooting Sports State Competition will be held in Gallatin County on March 7th, 8th and 9th. The archery shoot will happen in at Big Sky Archery in Gallatin County!! For those who haven't seen the event, we will have shooters (and families) in the basement from ~5:00 Friday until after 4:00 on Sunday while we clean up!

For this to happen smoothly, we need volunteers to help sign-in archers and check bow/arrow weight across all shooting times. All of that happens with volunteers. Competitors come from across the state, and we want them to have an enjoyable memory of the Bozeman Archery competition.

So please take a time (or 3) and help us out!! No need to know anything, we will train. Need to be 14 years or older to help with Scoring.

https://www.signupgenius.com/go/60B0C48A4A72DABFF2-55294153-2025

If you would be willing to assist us with scoring at the archery matches, that would be greatly appreciated.  If you have any questions, please contact Randy Radke at gv4harchery@gmail.com

Earn Money for your 4-H Project or Club

We have the AMAZING opportunity to continue to work MSU Concessions and this has become a GREAT way to raise money for 4-H club/project activities! We frequently commit to events throughout the year as they arise and update the SignUp Genius accordingly.

What does working MSU Concessions entail? All food is made and prepped by MSU Culinary/Concessions staff, 4-H members/parents just simply sell and serve it out of one of the concessions stands on MSU Campus (Stadium or Fieldhouse depending on the event). This is a super easy, fun and quick way to make money for your Clubs/Projects and gain some skills in the service industry! A Stand Leader and MSU Concessions staff will train you on the spot with what you need to know - No experience necessary!

4-H/MSU Fundraising Event SignUp:

https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10C084DA9A92AABFE3-48570182-fall

During the 2023-2024 4-H Year, 4-H Clubs/Projects earned over $19,000 total working at MSU Concession events!! If club/project members sign up for an event as a group, your club/project will get ALL the tips and a percentage of the profits from that event. If multiple projects/clubs sign up for the same game, then the tips and profits will be split between the groups. So, we highly encourage you to gather up your members, pick a game/event that your club/project will work as one group to maximize the amount of money you will earn!

Depending on the event, the day/time/hours will vary and depending on our concessions stand location, the number of people we will need per game will vary. We will need a combination of youths (minimum age of 10 with parent accompaniment) and teens/adults (ages 15+) to run cash registers.

UNLIMITED LEADERS COUNCIL (ULC)

Gallatin County Unlimited Leaders Council is the governing body of Gallatin County 4-H and all the committees within the county 4-H program.

The monthly ULC Board meeting was held on Feb 4, 2025 at the 4-H Office.  The meeting started with the standard proceedings (approval of minutes, financial reports, etc) and then Molly gave an update on some of the recent activities for our county 4-H members.  Record numbers from Gallatin County participated in the recent Citizenship Seminar and Legislative Breakfast in Helena.  The new 4-H Ambassador team had a successful retreat, with many ideas brainstormed for excellent leadership from our teens.  Molly also reminded everyone that open enrollment will be closing on March 1, so be sure to complete that task if you haven’t already!

Rec Lab will be held in White Sulphur Springs March 28-30, and promises to be a fun event as always.  Gallatin County is helping to run the weekend, and there are many great workshops planned.  Molly is encouraging early sign-up, which opens February 10.  An anticipated 200+ kids aged 13-18 will be attending!

MSU reached out with additional concessions fundraising opportunities, with the State AA basketball tournament at the Brick Breeden Fieldhouse March 13-15.  Check the Concessions Sign-Up Genius if your club or project is interested in this new opportunity.

The County-wide contests (Communications Day, Better Batter Baking and Stir-Ups Cooking) will be held Feb 21-22.  Molly reports having good numbers of kids signed up, and enough judges committed for a successful event.

Dag Nabids Club

Meetings take place the second to last Tuesday of each month.

The February Dag Nabids meeting was held on Tuesday, Feb 18th. We started the meeting by discussing where we would go sledding. It was decided the sledding party would be at Bear Canyon Trailhead on Sunday, March 2nd from 12:30-2:30. (What is a sled's favorite dessert? ICE CREAM SUN-DAY) It is asked that you bring snow gear and your own sleds.

We received $100 from the Montana Farmer's Union as a grant to be used for $50 to Heart of the Valley, $25 to children in transitional housing, and $25 to the needs pantry at the high school. We're happy to be helping children and animals in need!

The historians from the Dag Nabids are creating a scrapbook of pictures of what our members have done, group events, and projects we are involved in. You can contact Remi for a member form that you can fill out telling your projects, what you enjoy about 4-H, etc.

Teen Ambassador Matt came to the Dag Nabids February meeting to help teach Parliamentary Procedure. He taught us by making trail mix, where we had to make motions and amendments to add sweets, treats, and even wasabi beans. It turned out pretty good with a decent variety of sweets and saltines. Thanks, Matt, for teaching us Parli Pro!

There will not be a Dag Nabids meeting in March due to spring break, so we'll see you in April.

Punny Question of the Month: How do sleds celebrate their friendship? With a SLIDE show!

See you on the sledding hill!

Hi 4-Hers!

At our February meeting, our members got to know each other better through our 'Have You Ever' icebreaker activity and thanks to Gavin for building and demonstrating his race car track and jump for us during his 'show and share'. For our service project this month, great effort was put in by youth and adults alike by shoveling heavy snow off the outdoor basketball court so that Anderson school students can make use of this space! Thank you to the Kasmer family for providing snacks for our February meeting.

Note
: There will be no March club meeting. Our next meeting will be held Sunday, April 6 at 4:30 pm at Anderson School. Please send Elsa an email if you would like to have the opportunity to 'show & share' something you're interested in during our April meeting or if you want to bring snacks. See you in April!

BAKING @ MSU

**This Project is FULL and is no longer taking new enrollments.

We will meet at the MSU Food Lab, Herrick Hall Room #120, located on S. 7th Avenue on the 1st Monday of each month at 6pm (pick up will be 8:00pm). Leaders Krista and Katie come up with a variety of recipes each month and kids will be divided into small groups to bake. Parents are welcome to stay and help or come back at the end.

 * *We did a 4-H service project in February for Valentine's Day!! We made and packaged over 300 cookies for kids and families that live in the Wheat Suites transitional housing. So fun to watch these kiddos work together to accomplish this in 2 hours.

Put these dates on your calendar for future meetings:

3/3/25

4/7/25

5/5/25

Please watch for an e-mail shortly after each meeting with the recipes from the meeting to print if you would like them, and valuable links and reminders about 4-H record books and our baking project workbook.

CAMP COUNSELORS
  • E-Board: We are meeting Tuesday, March 18th at 6pm at the 4-H Office – please plan to touch base with all your assigned C.I.Ts to check in on them and how they are doing, questions they may have, concerns, etc.
  • Everyone: The next Camp Counselor meeting is Wednesday, March 26th at 6pm at the 4-H Office. I will send another email closer to our next meeting date with more details, what to bring/prep beforehand, etc.
    • We will be handing out information on our next Fundraiser – Cookie Dough and Meat Products through Success n’ Fundraising (we voted not to do Butter Braids this year). Counselors will have from March 26th – April 30th to collect orders/money for that fundraising opportunity.
  • Fundraising:
    • The Camp Project has committed to working/staffing TWO of the MSU Spring Rodeo Concessions shifts - Thursday, April 10 (5:30pm-11pm) and Sunday, Apil 13 (11:30am-4:30pm). If you're available, please sign up via the Camp Fundraising link here: Camp Counselors: Camp Fundraising - MSU Concessions
  • DATE CHANGE: On prior camp counselor schedules, we had a tentative meeting scheduled for April 29th – we will definitely need the extra planning/meeting time, but we have adjusted the date slightly.
    • ADD WEDNESDAY, April 30th at 6pm at the 4-H Office to your calendars for an April Camp Counselor meeting for workshop development and camp committee workday.

**If you will not be able to attend a meeting, you must let the Office or one of the Directors know ASAP. We appreciate your time, effort and willingness to serve this organization in a larger capacity. See you soon! 😊

Sincerely your Camp Crew,

Molly Yurdana (4-H Agent)

CAT

Our next meeting will be at 5:30pm at Alpenglow Animal Hospital (2401 Riata Rd). Please RSVP if possible so we have a good idea of numbers.

This meeting we will likely do a fun true/false quiz on cat facts, and will go over some of the record book Purr-fect Pals activities (every year, a member is expected to do at least 7 of the activities, and these do need to be done in order to go to fair).  We will also be going over some cat behaviors and body language.

Hope to see you all there!  I may need it to be a slightly shorter meeting as one of our show dogs is getting ready to whelp a litter.

CLOVERBUDS (AGES 5-7)

**This Project is FULL and is no longer taking new enrollments.

In February we did a lot of fun things around the photography project. What is a camera, kinds of photos, close up photo guesses, a photo show of our own pics with a gallery walk and a DIY camera.

Our next meeting will be Wednesday, March 12th at 5:30pm at the Fairgrounds.

We will meet once a month at the fairgrounds in the evening from 5:30-7ish on the third Wednesday of each month (except for March, where it falls on the Bozeman Schools spring break, we will meet on the 2nd Wednesday that month) from November-May.

I will send an email each month a few days ahead of time to let you know which building we are in (it can sometimes change based on availability) and what you need to bring for each meeting (this should be supplies you have at home: something like crayons, glue stick, stuffed animal etc).

If you have questions please email Erin Neil at ehagmeier@gmail.com or 406-431-7205.

DAIRY COW

The dairy cow project kicked off the new year on January 23. The members at this meeting planned what they wanted to learn about for the year and we welcomed three new members to the project! .

On February 27, the dairy cow project members met and judged cows that were part of the 95th annual Hoard's Dairyman judging contest. This is a national contest and the project members will submit their judging results to be scored as they represent our county 4-H program.

Next up, the dairy cow project members will be learning about diseases that affect dairy cows.  Members were assigned a disease to research at the February workshop and they will be presenting their findings to the group on March 27, 2025 at 6:30pm to 8:00pm (4-H Office). We look forward to hearing about what the members learned from this research project.

Dairy Cow project will meet the fourth Thursday of each month at the 4-H office. Watch your email for any updates or changes!

DOG OBEDIENCE

**This Project is FULL and is no longer taking new enrollments.

We will be meeting on March 26th at Montana Murray Kennels (25 Dollar Drive, Belgrade) at 5:30.  This is not on the schedule you received at orientation, but this is a non- negotiable meeting for EVERY member and a parent! Ron Murray is requiring this, and he will be speaking from 5:30 - 6:00. When he finishes I will be going through orientation information again from 6:00 - 7:00 for those of you who couldn't make it on January 8.  If you were at the January 8th meeting, you may leave when Ron is finished speaking, but you are welcome to stay as well. If you were not at the January 8th meeting, you must stay for this orientation! Attending one of the orientation meetings is MANDATORY for participating in the dog obedience project.

CAMP COUNSELORS...if your child is also a camp counselor, they do have a conflict. I have talked to Molly and this is our solution so please, please, please let your kids know!!!  They ALL need to attend Ron's 30 minute talk (non-negotiable) and they ALL need to be in touch with one of the CC leaders to let them know that they will (1) either be a few minutes late, for those that made it to the first orientation, or (2) that they will not be attending the CC meeting because they need to stay for orientation. If they don't contact a CC leader, it will not be excused.

Vaccines - if you have already sent me your proof of current Rabies, thank you! Rabies is REQUIRED, distemper and kennel cough are strongly encouraged.

If you haven't sent me your paperwork, please remember that it must be turned in before your dog can come to class.  You can email it to me, or you can bring a copy to class on February 12th or March 26th.

Concessions - link is in the newsletter!  This is a great way to earn money for any project or club. All parents and any member 10 years and older can work. You declare the club or project you are working for at the beginning of the shift. The money earned for the dog project is how we pay for our pizza party record book meeting, and it pays for the awards at the fair. Please donate a few hours of your time to help out a club or project.

    HORSELESS HORSE

On a VERY chilly Saturday in February, our members braved the weather to make a trek out to the therapy barn in Gallatin Gateway where they learned about horse safety and worked with horses on the ground. Students learned and practiced grooming, leading, and moving horses away from them. A few games of Red Light Green Light were thrown in to warm up those chilly legs! Thanks to Jeanette and her crew for hosting us and teaching us about your horses. Thanks to parents and members for being so tough in the cold temps!

We need to send a special thank you to Tessa Whitson and Aiden Smoot, along with Isa and Liam Capp, who wrapped presents at Murdochs before Christmas for the Horseless Horse project and raised quite a bit of money! PLEASE feel free to sign up for a Concessions shift at MSU events and designated the Horseless Horse project for your funds.  PARENTS, Gallatin 4-H is always is need of more stand leaders to be trained. It's a terrific way to give back to 4-H and meet other community members!

In the month of March, we will be having 2 scheduled meetings.

Regular Meeting: Thursday, March 20th will be a regular meeting with learning about breeds of horses, held at the 4-H office.

Pizza and Project Books Meeting: Monday, March 24th will be a record and project book meeting to help members get caught up (or ahead!) To be eligible for fair, each member needs to complete the My 4-H Year Record, the Non-animal Project Record, and 7 projects in their project books. Keeping up with records and projects now will give you a lot of peace of mind when Fair things are due in the summer!

Be on the lookout for more information for an equine event we will be helping with on Saturday, April 26th, but mark your calendars for that date.

Hang in there... spring is just around the corner... hoping winter hasn't been a "tail of whoa" for you!

Thank you to the seniors for helping with the younger members and for sticking around for a special, more advanced round of trivia just for them.

Our next meeting will be March 20th at 6:30 in Exhibit Building 4 at the Fairgrounds. Please remember to bring your bunnies, harnesses/leashes, workbooks and animal project journals.

      Hello Western Heritage Families

      Can you believe it's March?

Our first indoor meeting was February 11th.  It was very nice to see some new faces!  Our next meeting is March 11th.  We are hoping to have a representative for the Museum of the Rockies present about daily life during the 1860's-1900's.

Classroom meetings are located in the large conference room at the Extension Office.  We meet from 6:00 pm-8:00 pm.

March 11th- Presentation by Peyton Smith for the Museum of the Rockies

March 15th- Firearms history, safety rules, competition rules

April 8th- Clothing history, work on personas

      April 15th- Finish unfinished business

The zoom presentation by Jason Schubert was very informational.  I did see some of you logged on!  During the Zoom meeting, it was shared that the National Western Heritage Shoot will be July 29-31, 2025 in the Columbia, Missouri area.  More information should be coming soon.

Also, look for these zoom meetings:

March 18th 8:00pm CST Crawford Goldsby (Cherokee Bill); “I came here to die” - Mark Parman

Looking towards Fair- If you are interested in entering an individual Western Heritage display, the check-in date for indoor projects is July 13th.  This is a Sunday, not the usual Monday.  Look for more Fair updates from the 4-H office.
