Earn Money for your 4-H Project or Club

We have the AMAZING opportunity to continue to work MSU Concessions and this has become a GREAT way to raise money for 4-H club/project activities! We frequently commit to events throughout the year as they arise and update the SignUp Genius accordingly.

What does working MSU Concessions entail? All food is made and prepped by MSU Culinary/Concessions staff, 4-H members/parents just simply sell and serve it out of one of the concessions stands on MSU Campus (Stadium or Fieldhouse depending on the event). This is a super easy, fun and quick way to make money for your Clubs/Projects and gain some skills in the service industry! A Stand Leader and MSU Concessions staff will train you on the spot with what you need to know - No experience necessary!

4-H/MSU Fundraising Event SignUp:

During the 2023-2024 4-H Year, 4-H Clubs/Projects earned over $19,000 total working at MSU Concession events!! If club/project members sign up for an event as a group, your club/project will get ALL the tips and a percentage of the profits from that event. If multiple projects/clubs sign up for the same game, then the tips and profits will be split between the groups. So, we highly encourage you to gather up your members, pick a game/event that your club/project will work as one group to maximize the amount of money you will earn!

Depending on the event, the day/time/hours will vary and depending on our concessions stand location, the number of people we will need per game will vary. We will need a combination of youths (minimum age of 10 with parent accompaniment) and teens/adults (ages 15+) to run cash registers.

If you have any questions, please contact the 4-H Office

Legislative Learning🍀🏛️📝

Gallatin County 4-H brought a total of 24 youth members/adult volunteers to Helena to participate in the biennial Montana 4-H Citizenship Seminar and Legislative Breakfast events!!

14 of the Gallatin attendees participated in the Citizenship Seminar event, which is designed to educate Montana youth about the rights and responsibilities of citizenship and the legislative process through fun and interactive format. Youth wrote their own bills on important issues in their community, learned how to defend and debate during a mock legislative process, and engaged in a variety of educational tours including the Old Governor’s Mansion, the Capitol Building and the Department of Livestock.

The other 10 of our Gallatin youth and parents joined us for the 20th Biennial Legislative Breakfast hosted by Montanans for 4-H. This a unique opportunity for 4-H youth to directly connect with our elected officials, share their 4-H experience, and communicate the value of the 4-H youth development program. Thank you to the 6 local Gallatin Senators and Representatives that joined us at the early-morning event this year!

2025 Montana 4-H Rec Lab

SAVE the DATE and follow the yellow brick road to the 2025 Rec Lab because There’s No Place Like 4-H !

March 28-30th, 2025 in White Sulphur Springs, MT

Registration will OPEN on ZSuite on February 10th and CLOSE March 12th

Cost: $100 per youth member

Participants will have the opportunity to pick from a list of workshops during registration.

What is Rec Lab? “Rec Lab” stands for Recreation Lab and means that everything at this Montana 4-H state event is hands-on and fun! This event provides an opportunity for youth to enhance their leadership, communication and team building skills in an action-packed and interactive setting. Rec Lab programming is designed to provide participants with tips and tricks for being a better club, camp and community leader.

Montana 4-H Rec Lab is open to youth 13+ years old (age as of Oct. 1st, 2024). This event is ideal for younger senior members to attend as a first-time state event. It allows them to form relationships with 4-H peers from across the state, broaden their skills, and widen their network.  The event has a camp feel because everything will take place in one school or location! Participants will bring air mattresses and sleeping bags to sleep on the gym floor, and attend workshops all together in the school and join lots of social and fun activities.

Extension Staff and Volunteers: The idea of sleeping on an air mattress in a school gym may not be your idea of a fun weekend, but this is a great event for you too! The program is conducive to meeting people from around the state and exchanging ideas. You are sure to gain some great info and bring home motivated youth leaders.

Thank you to District 6 counties: Meagher, Gallatin, Park, Broadwater, Wheatland, Sweet Grass, and Lewis and Clark Counties for planning and hosting this event.

UNLIMITED LEADERS COUNCIL (ULC)

Gallatin County Unlimited Leaders Council is the governing body of Gallatin County 4-H and all the committees within the county 4-H program.

The monthly meeting of the ULC Board met on January 7, 2025 at the 4-H Office.  This was a joint meeting of the Gallatin County ULC Board and the Gallatin 4-H Foundation.

The Foundation presented its Annual Update, with the primary focus on updates to scholarships offered by the Foundation.  The Foundation is increasing scholarship amounts across most scholarships, with some scholarships going from a previous award of $250 up to $2000.  This is in the hopes of getting more applicants, as well as achieving the goal of providing more support to 4-H’ers continuing their education beyond high school.  The Foundation is also increasing support of non-traditional track scholarships, with a scholarship being offered for those attending 2-year degrees, certifications and professional licenses (such as welding certification, cosmetology school, EMT/paramedic training, culinary school, and dental/medical assistant.). There is also a new scholarship being offered for those pursuing employment through a vocational apprenticeship program (on-the-job training scholarship).

Bonnie Radke and Mattie Oostema presented on their experience at National 4-H Congress in Atlanta over Thanksgiving.  They had a great trip, made many new friends, collected 4-H state pins from across the United States, and were able to try many flavors of Coca-Cola from around the world (some of which were delicious, and some of which were not) at the World of Coca-Cola field trip.

Foundation and ULC then split up to conduct their individual meetings, and ULC discussed the upcoming Citizenship Seminar in Helena.  Gallatin County has a significant increase in number of kids attending this year, which was celebrated.  Ideas were brainstormed for a thank you for the Bozeman Stampede as they continue to be extremely generous in their support of 4-H in Gallatin County.  We also discussed potential improvements in the Fairgrounds Concessions stand, and the steps that will need to be taken to achieve those improvements.  Molly appealed for more judges for the upcoming County Contests (Communications Day, Better Batter Baking and Stir-Ups Cooking) which will take place on February 21 and 22.

The next meeting of the ULC will be Tuesday February 4th at 6:00 pm at the 4-H Extension Office.

Dag Nabids Club

Meetings take place the second to last Tuesday of each month.

Our January meeting started with an icebreaker where we went around and told each other unique facts about each other. After that, we decided what charity our money would go toward if we win a $100 grant from Montana Farmer's Union. We decided spending $50 on animal toys and care and $50 toward homeless/less fortunate kids in the county. Next, we talked about places to go for a winter party including snow tubing/cosmic tubing, sledding, or the ice skating rink. Check the Band app for information on the winter party! The club also made Valentine's crafts to share with our community. The February Dag Nabids meeting will be Tuesday, Feb. 18th at 6pm in Rm 138 in the Animal Science Building at MSU.

Hello 4-Hers!

It was great to see you at our Hyalite Hawks Club meeting in January. After our business meeting, two of our members, Sadie and Hannah, 'showed and shared' about their robotics projects! Our service project for this month was partnering with the Gallatin County Rest Home by decorating cards and writing messages to their residents. Thank you to the Meyer family for providing the tasty snacks for this month's meeting!

Note: Our next meeting will be held Sunday, February 23 at 4:30 pm at Anderson School. Remember to send Elsa an email if you would like to 'show & share' a project or talk about any topic during our February and March meetings! Also, let her know if your family wants to be the snack provider for any of the upcoming meetings.

BAKING @ MSU

**This Project is FULL and is no longer taking new enrollments.

We will meet at the MSU Food Lab, Herrick Hall Room #120, located on S. 7th Avenue on the 1st Monday of each month at 6PM (pick up will be 8:00). Leaders Krista and Katie come up with a variety of recipes each month and kids will be divided into small groups to bake. Parents are welcome to stay and help or come back at the end.

We also talked in our last meeting about what the 4 H's are, ask your kiddo if they know! They also are working on our public speaking skills by sharing about the recipe they made to the whole group.

* * 4-H service project in February!! Please note that next month we will not be tasting our own recipes but baking for a service project. I have made contact with HRDC and we will be baking/decorating/packaging treats for the kids and families that live in the Wheat Suites transitional housing. We will do this work and then we will freeze them until they are handed out on Valentines Day to try and make the day more special for those who are experiencing homelessness. We may need a few extra hands on deck to help us individually wrap them so parents, stick around if you want to help!

*If anyone feels a record book class would be helpful please let me know and I would be happy to hold one to help kids. I would highly suggest working on these throughout the year to avoid a ton of work and trying to remember when record books are due.

Put these dates on your calendar for future meetings:

2/3/25

3/3/25

4/7/25

5/5/25

Please watch for an e-mail shortly after each meeting with the recipes from the meeting to print if you would like them, and valuable links and reminders about 4-H record books and our baking project workbook.

CAT

We had a great meeting Wednesday Jan 22nd, where we watched a video on cat showmanship and tested ourselves on cat breeds with fun grab bag prizes.  Members were sent home with a packet on different cat body types, hair coats and colors so they can better describe their cats for fair and 4-H events.  We were all so thankful for the great, hearty hamburger soup that the Neil family provided for dinner- it was a huge hit with both the kids and their families!

Our February meeting is Wednesday, February 5th at 5:30pm at Alpenglow Animal Hospital, 2401 Riata Rd, Bozeman. Please RSVP if possible for a number count!

CLOVERBUDS (AGES 5-7)

**This Project is FULL and is no longer taking new enrollments.

The Cloverbud program is designed for youth ages 5-7 (age as of Oct. 1) and strives to develop age-appropriate skills and abilities by giving these young members the opportunity to explore various topics and activities in 4-H before becoming a regular youth member.

At our January meeting we did all things CAT because this project is growing in popularity and Cloverbuds are eligible to join!

Cat activities included:

Dr. Julie showed us a cat exam on Champ (a real cat)

*We watched a cat showmanship video and we had our own "cat show".

*A thank you note to the HOV for taking care of the cats.

*Making a cat breed book

*Identifying cat parts

*Making "cat treat trail mix" to share with our friends, neighbors or relatives that have a cat!

Our next meeting will be Wednesday, February 19th at 5:30pm at the Fairgrounds.

We will meet once a month at the fairgrounds in the evening from 5:30-7ish on the third Wednesday of each month (except for March, where it falls on the Bozeman Schools spring break, we will meet on the 2nd Wednesday that month) from November-May.

I will send an email each month a few days ahead of time to let you know which building we are in (it can sometimes change based on availability) and what you need to bring for each meeting (this should be supplies you have at home: something like crayons, glue stick, stuffed animal etc).

If you have questions please email Erin Neil at ehagmeier@gmail.com or 406-431-7205.

COOKING @ MSU

**This Project is FULL and is no longer taking new enrollments.

While we keep ourselves warm during this winter season, the Cooking @ MSU Project has been busy whipping up some delicious food in the MSU Food Lab. Last month we made homemade pasta with tomato & Alfredo sauces from scratch with basic ingredients.  We had a packed house with 17 members! The food was absolutely delicious and we had so much fun!

We will have TWO meetings in February...  A special Sweets & Treats meeting scheduled for Friday 2/7/25 5:30 - 8:30 pm (just in time for Valentine's Day), and then we have our next meeting Tuesday 2/18/25 5:30 - 8:30 pm. 'Taco Tuesday' is the theme for this evening, but we will make it a 'bowl' to practice for the Stir Ups Cooking Competition held in the MSU Cooking Lab 2/22/25.  If you are available that day to compete, then you should sign up.  It is so much fun and there are great prizes to be won doing what you love to do!

Please contact the 4-H office or Stephanie Grace with any questions.  Hope to see everyone at all of these events!

We meet once a month in the MSU Food Lab commercial kitchen located in room #120 in Herrick Hall off of S. 7th Avenue. Most meetings are held the 3rd Tuesday of each month, with a few exceptions for holidays, from 5:30 to 8:30ish pm (dates listed below).  The meetings aren't done until the kitchen is clean, so each member is expected to stay until everything is done.

Upcoming Dates:

Friday 2/7/25 - "Sweets & Treats"

Tuesday 2/18/25 - "Taco Tuesday"

3/25/25

4/15/25

5/20/25

DOG OBEDIENCE

**This Project is FULL and is no longer taking new enrollments.

We had a great turn out for our tour of West Paw and for our orientation meeting. It was great to see some familiar faces, and to meet all the new faces.

We will have a record book meeting/class on Wednesday, February 12 at 5:30 at Manhattan High School in the "Commons" area. Please bring a pencil and the packet (specifically the record book portion) you got at orientation to this meeting. If you didn't make it to the orientation meeting I will have a packet for you. We will go over EXACTLY what your record books should include for this project. We will have more record book meetings, but this is the only CLASS that we will have. Whether it's your first year in the project, or your fifth, please make plans to be there. Parents, please plan on staying for this meeting as you need to know this information too!

Several members missed the orientation meeting we had on January 8th due to illness and weather. Also, due to a scheduling conflict in January, Ron Murray was not able to attend our first meeting. He has requested that ALL members and parents attend a meeting so that he can address some important items with you. Since he donates the use of his facility, his expertise, and a couple of his employees to us, please put this on your calendar and plan to be there. WEDNESDAY, MARCH 26 @ 5:30. Location TBD. This will also be the makeup orientation. ***Without this meeting, you will not be able to participate in the dog obedience project.

    LEATHERCRAFT

The Leathercraft project’s last meeting was Saturday, January 18th.  After reviewing the six basic tools, how and why we stabilize our project and how to case leather properly, everyone learned how to properly use a swivel knife. After playing with the swivel knifes and how to make decorative cuts to a project, everyone was given a bookmark.  Everyone stamped and carved their bookmark however they desired. As individuals finished their bookmarks, I showed them how to finish the edges of any project by using an edger and slicking the edges.  Our next meeting we will finish and buck stitch the edges of your project.  This next meeting will be from 1-4 pm on February 22nd in Belgrade at 161 W. 4-H Archery state shoot: March 7-9th .

The first weekend of March, Gallatin County will be hosting the 4-H Archery state shoot.  4-H shooters from across the state will be attending.

The State Shoot Registration is open. Please go to the link below for more information about the event. https://www.montana.edu/extension/4h/programs_and_events/events/shooting_sports/shooting-sports-SS.html.
