An email has been sent to 4-H families with high school seniors currently enrolled in 4-H. Here is a link to the email: https://xnwgx.mjt.lu/nl3/3D8ExQTM5egM9oh4AUtIow?hl=en

Hilleman Scholars Program application deadline is Tuesday, February 11, 2025, at midnight.

What is the MSU Hilleman Scholars Program?

A scholarship program at MSU that provides funding and other support, including:

  • $16,000 Scholarship - $4,000 per year for 4 years
  • $2,000 for attending Summer Success Academy (SSA)
    • SSA is a month-long experience where scholars stay in residence halls (with free room and board) and work with faculty, mentors, and tutors to get a head start on college-level coursework while getting to know MSU, Bozeman, and their classmates.
  • Earn 6 credits before starting the Fall semester by attending SSA, saving additional money
  • $3,000 Study Abroad Experience
  • Access to support throughout their time at MSU such as:
    • Student Success Advisors
    • Career Education Coaches
    • Financial Coaches
    • Peer Mentors
    • Free Tutoring

Who is eligible?

To be eligible for the program, students must:

  • Graduate from a Montana High School
  • Qualify for a Pell Grant
    • Pell Grants are federal financial aid provided based on financial need. Financial need is determined by the difference between the Cost of Attendance (COA) and the student’s Expected Family Contribution (EFC), which is calculated based on information provided in the FAFSA.

This scholarship program targets seniors who are unlikely to attend college. It is common for them to believe they can’t get any scholarships, but the Hilleman Scholars program is looking for them. The program is interested in applications from students who excel, as well as students who may not see themselves as college-ready but with the extra support of the program, would be successful.

What can you do?

  1. Share general information about the program with students, parents, and others.
  2. Conduct targeted outreach to students you think would be a good fit.
  3. Connect with community members or school staff who can help identify students who should be encouraged to apply.
  4. Direct students to the Office of Financial Education at MSU to assist with FAFSA and assessing Pell Grant eligibility.
  5. Review the county-specific list of MSU applicants eligible for the Hilleman Scholars Program for students you may know and encourage them to apply. (I will be sending this list early in 2025.)

For more information, visit the MSU Hilleman Scholars Program webpage, email hillemanscholars@montana.edu, or call 406-994-7627. Please email Rebekah LaCroix at Rebekah.lacroix@montana.edu if you have specific questions about the scholarship itself. If you need other materials to help promote the program (posters, slides, etc.), please reach out to me.

Winter Volunteer Training Series

We strive to provide our volunteers with the necessary training, tools and networking opportunities to be successful and confident in their roles in our 4-H program. Based on feedback collected from the "Get to Know You" volunteer survey the office issued to all Gallatin 4-H volunteers, we found that shorter "grab n' go" weeknight trainings would be preferable.

The Gallatin 4-H Office will be offering a  Winter Volunteer Training SERIES of leadership development opportunities for ANY and ALL certified 4-H Volunteers. These trainings will be held on Wednesday evenings from 6pm-8pm, January 15 – February 5th, 2025. We encourage you to attend all four training nights, or you may pick and choose based on what you feel would best help you as a volunteer. We are bringing in external facilitators that are well versed in these training topics to ensure your time is well spent!

Earn Money for your 4-H Project or Club

We have the AMAZING opportunity to continue to work MSU Concessions and this has become a GREAT way to raise money for 4-H club/project activities! We frequently commit to events throughout the year as they arise and update the SignUp Genius accordingly.

What does working MSU Concessions entail? All food is made and prepped by MSU Culinary/Concessions staff, 4-H members/parents just simply sell and serve it out of one of the concessions stands on MSU Campus (Stadium or Fieldhouse depending on the event). This is a super easy, fun and quick way to make money for your Clubs/Projects and gain some skills in the service industry! A Stand Leader and MSU Concessions staff will train you on the spot with what you need to know - No experience necessary!

4-H/MSU Fundraising Event SignUp:

https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10C084DA9A92AABFE3-48570182-fall

During the 2023-2024 4-H Year, 4-H Clubs/Projects earned over $19,000 total working at MSU Concession events!! If club/project members sign up for an event as a group, your club/project will get ALL the tips and a percentage of the profits from that event. If multiple projects/clubs sign up for the same game, then the tips and profits will be split between the groups. So, we highly encourage you to gather up your members, pick a game/event that your club/project will work as one group to maximize the amount of money you will earn!

Depending on the event, the day/time/hours will vary and depending on our concessions stand location, the number of people we will need per game will vary. We will need a combination of youths (minimum age of 10 with parent accompaniment) and teens/adults (ages 15+) to run cash registers.

2025 Montana 4-H  Rec Lab

County Agents, Volunteer Leaders and Members from District 6 are looking forward to hosting the 2025 Montana 4-H Rec Lab

SAVE the DATE and follow the yellow brick road to the 2025 Rec Lab because There’s No Place Like 4-H !

March 28-30th, 2025 in White Sulphur Springs, MT

See flyer attached – please help promote within your counties!

What is Rec Lab? “Rec Lab” stands for Recreation Lab and means that everything at this Montana 4-H state event is hands-on and fun! This event provides an opportunity for youth to enhance their leadership, communication and team building skills in an action-packed and interactive setting. Rec Lab programming is designed to provide participants with tips and tricks for being a better club, camp and community leader.

Montana 4-H Rec Lab is open to youth 13+ years old (age as of Oct. 1st, 2024). This event is ideal for younger senior members to attend as a first-time state event. It allows them to form relationships with 4-H peers from across the state, broaden their skills, and widen their network.  The event has a camp feel because everything will take place in one school or location! Participants will bring air mattresses and sleeping bags to sleep on the gym floor, and attend workshops all together in the school and join lots of social and fun activities.

Registration will be through ZSuite and is set to open on February 10th and will close March 12th. The cost will be around $100 per person. Participants will have the opportunity to pick from a list of workshops during registration. Stay tuned for a Workshop Proposal email coming your way soon!

Extension Staff and Volunteers: The idea of sleeping on an air mattress in a school gym may not be your idea of a fun weekend, but this is a great event for you too! The program is conducive to meeting people from around the state and exchanging ideas. You are sure to gain some great info and bring home motivated youth leaders.

Thank you to District 6 counties: Meagher, Gallatin, Park, Broadwater, Wheatland, Sweet Grass, and Lewis and Clark Counties for planning and hosting this event.

UNLIMITED LEADERS COUNCIL (ULC)

Gallatin County Unlimited Leaders Council is the governing body of Gallatin County 4-H and all the committees within the county 4-H program.

The monthly annual meeting of the ULC board met December 3rd at the 4-H office.  We voted in Sarah Capp as Vice President and Sarah Brechbuhler as secretary for the ULC.  Also present were our new youth members Hazel Nash and Danika Johnson.  The ULC voted on our 4-H theme for the 2025 year: The Magic of 4-H

Scott Francis started the meeting off as our Guest Presentator.  He is the Shooting Sports Leader and Outdoor Education Coordinator for Montana 4-H. The 4-H shooting sports is in great shape with the number of active 4-H participates for this year and the high quality volunteers.  Archery, Air Rifle and small bore were full and the other disciplines numbers were strong and anticipated to be a max capacity.  The State 4-H Shoot is scheduled for March 7th, 8th and 9th across the Gallatin Valley.  Our Shooting sports participants had various national champions and one of our past 4-H shooters Ivan Roe went on to the Olympics.  His goal for the Shooting sports is to continue to add more adult volunteers across the various disciplines.  Scott expressed the need to train up a new county coordinator over the next few years.  He also visited about the air-gun venue and its fundraising efforts.

Kelly gave an update on the Bozeman Stampede donating $25,000 to Gallatin 4-H because of the amount of help 4-H and parent volunteers put into the Stampede this year.  Molly gave updates on the Legislative Breakfast/Citizenship seminar and 4-H camp counselor selection process they had a record of 40 applications and interviews were December 2-4.

Dag Nabids Club

Meetings take place the second to last Tuesday of each month.

We went to the Gallatin Rest Home on Monday, December 16th and lots of club members showed up. Some of the pets we brought included dogs, cats, chickens, and even bunnies and geckos! The residents loved all the friends visiting. Some of the cats may have even been jealous of the Gallatin County Grand Champion cat!

We also collected food for the Food Bank that day because this visit was in place of our regular monthly meeting. The Dag Nabids collected 210 lbs for the Food Bank. Nice One, Guys!

Our January meeting will be held Tuesday, January 21st at 6:30 pm in Rm138 of the MSU Animal Bioscience Building. 🙂

We will meet at the MSU Food Lab, Herrick Hall Room #120, located on S. 7th Avenue on the 1st Monday of each month at 6PM (pick up will be 8:00). Leaders Krista and Katie come up with a variety of recipes each month and kids will be divided into small groups to bake. Parents are welcome to stay and help or come back at the end.

In December we made a lot of holiday themed recipes and are working on both our baking skills but also our "clean up the kitchen" skills :) and public speaking.

Put these dates on your calendar for future meetings:

1/13/25 *Please note the date change for the January meeting. See e-mail regarding this change.

2/3/25

CAMP COUNSELORS

Thank you all for attending the 1st meeting of the year – EVERYONE was in attendance which was so impressive with 38 of you! Keep it up.

Pictured below is an updated digital copy of our current Camp Counselor project schedule. Please add these dates to your calendars/reminders now and we will send any updates as they arise. Meetings are the most important to attend, fundraising throughout the year is required but there are many options, and team bonding activities are not required but highly encouraged.

The 2025 Camp Theme was voted to be SPACE! Get ready to have an “out of this world” year!

  • Our next Counselor Meeting will be Tuesday, January 14th at 6:00pm (tentatively at the 4-H Office for now – I’m looking into getting us a bigger space). We will set Camp Committees and start working on camp plans, so be sure to attend!

  • Our first team bonding activity will be a Bowling Party on Saturday, January 25th from 5:30pm-8:30pm at the MSU Student Union Rec Center! We will provide pizza, snacks and refreshments. Join us for some team bonding fun!

**If you will not be able to attend a meeting, you must let the Office or one of the Directors know ASAP. We appreciate your time, effort and willingness to serve this organization in a larger capacity. See you soon! 😊

*2024-2025 Camp Counselor BAND Group:

  • If you haven’t already, please join our Camp Counselor BAND group for the year: https://band.us/n/a9a9A79616y8N. We will post meeting reminders, polls and other information here frequently. Parents are usually the ones that receive our emails, but BAND allows the teens to subscribe to our group to stay connected and in the loop!

Happy holidays!

Sincerely your Camp Crew,

Molly Yurdana (4-H Agent)

Amy Juliano (Camp Co-Director)

CAT

Happy Holidays to all of our cat project members, and their families!

We had a great time this month with making personalized cat-themed laminated ornaments for the holidays, and enjoyed a fun evening to kick off the season!

**January is going to be a bit of a change, and I apologize ahead of time. Due to the holidays (our meeting would typically be held the first Wed of the month, which would be New Year's Day) as well as a national veterinary leadership conference the state is sending me to in early January, we are postponing (January only) our meeting until Wednesday January 22nd at 5:30pm at Alpenglow Animal Hospital. The topic this time will be grooming for our cats. This meeting topic also incorporates one of the cat project book activities, so I encourage all members to work through the grooming section ahead of time to be well-versed on cat grooming. Use your parents to work through the section if needed, and to sign off on it.  I'm aiming/hoping to have fun grooming-themed giveaways for meeting members!

As always, I try to have dinner available to all who choose to join us after the meeting, and if anyone has a good dinner menu idea I welcome feedback!  Also, we are always happy to have volunteers to bring sides and so forth.  We do have juice boxes from our December meeting that we will have available.

Thank you, and Happy Holidays to all!

Julie Oghigian

CLOVERBUDS (AGES 5-7)

**This Project is FULL and is no longer taking new enrollments.

The Cloverbud program is designed for youth ages 5-7 (age as of Oct. 1) and strives to develop age-appropriate skills and abilities by giving these young members the opportunity to explore various topics and activities in 4-H before becoming a regular youth member.

At our December meeting we had a cake decorating demo and the kids got to try it themselves. We also make 4-H ornaments and create cute little Santas that were dropped off at the Gallatin Rest Home for their residents to enjoy. Our next meeting will be Wednesday, January 15th at 5:30pm at the Fairgrounds.

Cloverbuds Big Service Project News: We collected 587 pounds of food for the Gallatin Food Bank with our "4-H CLoverbud Holiday Food Drive" where we used a letter to ask friends, family and neighbors to donate to our cause. The cloverbuds voted on 300 pounds as a goal so we blew that away!

We will meet once a month at the fairgrounds in the evening from 5:30-7ish on the third Wednesday of each month (except for March, where it falls on the Bozeman Schools spring break, we will meet on the 2nd Wednesday that month) from November-May.

I will send an email each month a few days ahead of time to let you know which building we are in (it can sometimes change based on availability) and what you need to bring for each meeting (this should be supplies you have at home: something like crayons, glue stick, stuffed animal etc).

If you have questions please email Erin Neil at ehagmeier@gmail.com or 406-431-7205.

COOKING @ MSU

**This Project is FULL and is no longer taking new enrollments.

Happy Holiday Season!  Hope all of you enjoy your holidays by filling your bellies full of delicious food, and hopefully something cooked by you!

Our next meeting is scheduled for Tuesday 01/21, 5:30 - 8:30 pm at Herrick Hall in room #120, S. 7th Avenue. Don't forget your hair tie if you need one, and make sure to leave the cooties out of the kitchen. Look for the Signup Genius email one week prior to the meeting and make sure to RSVP so that we can plan and grocery shop accordingly.

We meet once a month in the MSU Food Lab commercial kitchen located in room #120 in Herrick Hall off of S. 7th Avenue. Most meetings are held the 3rd Tuesday of each month, with a few exceptions for holidays, from 5:30 to 8:30ish pm (dates listed below).  The meetings aren't done until the kitchen is clean, so each member is expected to stay until everything is done.

We will plan one field trip and one fundraiser meeting outside of the listed dates.

Our class makeup day is January 19 with the first class starting at 1:00 in the conference room at the 4-H office. You only need to attend the specific classes you missed. The classes and approximate times are as follows:

Aug 13 with the health department (1:00pm)

Since all of you are all going to Helena that day to attend a super exciting experience at the capital, Montana 4-H Citizenship Seminar, the four of you will need to make up your missed classes at another time. I am willing to do this with the four of you and Saturday afternoons will work best for me. Please reach out to me to schedule your makeup sessions ASAP!

Our last meeting will be on Tuesday January 21st at 6PM. A previous email I sent had this meeting scheduled for the 7th. That date is incorrect, my apologies!!!  We will get our team assignments and go over other agenda items. We will get to see the website and how to navigate it, as well as answer any remaining questions you may still have. Many of you have asked about when you will get to do the dog testing portion, and I am hoping to have a concrete answer to that by then. In the meantime, keep working on the testing criteria I sent out previously and be sure to focus on duration work!

Attending pack walks as often as possible is super important too! I know the weekday morning walks won't be much of an option, but please try to make it to the Thursday or Saturday walks!

Monday morning 10-11

Wednesday morning 9:30-10:30

Thursday evening 5-6

Saturday morning 8:45-9:45

HORSELESS HORSE

What fun we had at our December meeting! Members practiced patterns by wearing bridles and taking turns as the horse, rider, or pattern maker. We also learned about leads and why being on the correct lead can be so important! Our special guest visitor was the Bozeman Stampede Teen Queen, Emilie Torgerson, who shared with us about her duties as a rodeo queen and helped lead us through practice patterns on foot. Thanks to Silver Brand Ranch and Katie Lynn Smith for the use of their warm barn and indoor arena.

Our January meeting will have a date change to Saturday, January 25th (time TBA) at a barn in Gallatin Gateway where we will have a chance to learn about horse safety and work with horses on the ground.

See you next year!

POULTRY - Market or Breed/Show

Happy New Year 2025! We hope all of the 4-H poultry members had a good holiday season and are ready for the 2025 year.  At our last meeting in 2024, our members enjoyed getting to know each other at our annual Christmas party. We also completed a community service activity in the project by making Christmas cards that were given to the Parkhaven Retirement Home in Manhattan, MT.

Our next meeting for poultry will be on Thursday January 9, 2025 and this is the required workshop for the members that are in the MARKET part of the poultry project as all portions of the market side of the project will be covered at this workshop.  As this meeting is geared towards the market part of the project, there will be no separate cloverbud activity at this meeting.  If you are in the market part of the poultry project or if you are in the regular breed/show part of the project (and would like to come join) we will be having the January meeting in Building 3 of the Fairgrounds from 6:30pm to 8:00pm.

If you can not attend this meeting (due to prior commitments) and you are in the market part of the project, please notify Shawna Oostema prior to the meeting.

Please save the following dates for future workshops: January 9, February 13, March 13, April 10, April 26, and June 12.

ROBOTICS

**This Project is FULL and is no longer taking new enrollments.

Hello Robotics Crew!

Communication this year will primarily be through band, so I highly reccomend joining the band if you havent already. Join Here

Robotics Level 1 is still scheduled to start in February.

Level 1 = Lego Robotics & Intro to Coding

Robotics Level 2 -

We had an introductory meeting for Level 2 in November. We discussed what we want to do this upcomming year, and the basic notes were that the members wanted to dig further into coding, circuit design, kinematics, and 3D printing. There isn't a project book for robotics 2 this year, but I will be providing binders to keep each meeting's handouts and project records in. The supplies needed for robotics 2 this year are very similar to the ones needed for robotics last year, those being:

A Windows or Apple laptop of some sort

A mouse - wired or wireless

A dedicated tote bag or old backpack - robotics components tend to get lost at home between meetings

And a couple of pens or pencils

If you need help aquiring any of those supplies, please let me know. I've got a couple spare laptops and miscelaneous supplies, and I'm happy to loan them out if needed.

Thanks y'all, and I'll see you in December!

SEWING

**This Project is FULL and is no longer taking new enrollments.

Our sewing classes have been so fun and filled with creativity! Last month, we held a drop-in style class to allow for newer members to catch up with basics. It was also an opportunity to practice their sewing skills on making pin cushions and Christmas tree pillows. As always, we stuffed the trees and the pin cushions with scrap fabric to re-use materials as much as possible.

Bonnie, Maggie, Toni, and I wrapped presents at Murdochs at the beginning of the month and it was a blast! Plus, it got us in the holiday spirit and we raised some money for the project. At January's meeting, we will be making fleece hats and ear warmers that the members can keep or donate. We're looking forward to it!

Due to a scheduling conflict, January's meeting will be January 7th from 5-7 at the RevivALL Studio.

2105 Lea Ave in Bozeman

    ARCHERY

Project Notes: *Youth members must be at least 9 years old (age as of Oct. 1st) to participate.

Archery will be held at Big Sky Archery, 77 Laura Louise Lane located at the intersection of Baxter Lane and Jackrabbit Lane on Sundays from 1:00 – 5:00 pm.

    4-H Archery Families and Archers,

Enjoy the holidays and if you need a break from the festivities we will be shooting both December 22 and December 29th.  Hope to see you then.

Archers start thinking of your goals. Both goals for the day and your long term goals for the archery season. We’ll be talking more about this in January.

It is the beginning of Shooting tournaments.  These are totally optional and do require travel around the state. These tournaments will be sent via email. I encourage Archers to try to attend at least one tournament prior to the State shoot, but again this is optional.  You can borrow club  bows and arrows for the tournaments if needed.

    SWINE

Hi Swine Families! We have started planning for another great year in the Swine Project. Attached is our Welcome Letter for the year. Please read through it but here are some common  FAQs & additional information to get you started :

📃 Am I on your list? If you received our recent "Welcome to the 2025 Swine Project" email, you are on our list for the 2025 project. Thank you for registering on time, as it helps us in planning. If you have additional email addresses you want on our distribution list, please reply to this email.

📅 When are the Swine Project Meetings? We do not meet regularly (same-day-each-month-type schedule) We will offer many opportunities for the youth to meet the 3-workshop requirements between now and June (typically 10-15 workshops are offered). Our Committee is finalizing the workshops soon and will provide more information as soon as we can  so you can better plan your project. A couple of our early ones are listed here:

Project Orientation Meeting on Wednesday, January 15th at 6:30pm at the fairgrounds in exhibit building #2. For this, we ask that new members (1st or 2nd year) plus one parent / helper attend if possible. It is an opportunity to learn about the project requirements, some of the lingo and meet all members of the Swine Committee. We will also invite older Senior Members to speak and introduce themselves at this meeting so SAVE THE DATE.

Feeds Workshop- We will have our feeds workshop on Tuesday, Feb 4th at 6:30pm in the small ballroom at The Best Western Grantree Inn on North 7th in Bozeman. This workshop is presented by CHS Feeds.

    Remember, you need 3 workshops!

What should we be doing right now to get ready?

Go by the Extension Office and pay your invoice to become fully registered in 4-H & pickup your Project Workbooks (if you're new) as well as your Record Books
(all members). We have changes for the workbook requirements for members in 3rd year and above. You will see an email in January with the new options to fulfill the project workbook requirement for swine members in their 3rd year and above.

Like Reminders via text? Register your cell phone (and any Members) for our Remind page (we recently disabled the 2024 Remind so you must re-register for 2025) https://www.remind.com/join/2025swin OR Text @2025swin to 81010 and reply once with your name.

EACH Member needs to sign a Swine Project Contract.  These will be coming as a docu sign from the 4H office soon.  It's a good thing to review with your members to be sure they understand the commitment.

EACH Member will also sign a Market Livestock Contract.Sign Contract Here: https://na3.docusign.net/Member/PowerFormSigning.aspx?PowerFormId=5e957a50-2ab1-40ea-90fb-9e267983b91a&env=na3&acct=960f6090-f7cb-40a6-adf5-0490f456d6eb&v=2.This will also be due April 15th, 2025.

Look around for a source for your pigs, discuss your budget for purchasing, and make plans for building / improving your pen and shelter for your pigs in the spring. We've also attached the COOL Source Form that will help you decipher some of the information you'll need to gather when acquiring your pigs. LOTS more info to come on getting your project kicked off if you're new...but most pigs are born late December/January 1st and ready for their new homes mid-March/early-April. They will weigh 50-100 pounds at this point and in the following 90 days+, you'll raise them to be 220-290lbs

💰 How can we help the Swine Project as a whole?

Fundraising! We've identified additional repairs to the Swine Barn, needs for expanding to accommodate our growing project including acquiring a respectable project scale for use by all. For all of this, we would LOVE for you and your family to sign up for a MSU Game and/or Concert/Basketball Game Concessions spot (yes you've received several emails about this to-date). It's a great fundraiser and it empowers the kids to contribute/help (mom and dad aren't just cutting checks); it's indoors and warm; AND there is no prep for members, parents or us leaders: you just show up for the times listed and funds are transferred through the 4-H Office. Please sign up to help and you can meet some of your fellow Swine Families!

Let us know if you have any questions or need more information at this time.
