2024 Montana 4-H Fall Leadership Training - Recap

We had 13 Gallatin County teens survive the jungle with their next-level leadership skills in Billings earlier in November! ๐Ÿ€๐Ÿฆœ๐Ÿ’๐Ÿ

It was a trip filled with adventurous workshops, team building activities, crazy dance moves and new friendships from across state. Our very own State 4-H Ambassador Bonnie Radke and 4-H Agent Molly both led workshops at the event focused on navigating team dynamics and professionalism. The Gallatin 4-H teen leaders are so excited to kick off another great 4-H year!

From MSU News: "MSU and the Gallatin Valley community donated 234,866 pounds of food and $418,010, according to Kim Cleary in the MSU Office of Student Engagement, which coordinates Can the Griz. UPCOMING ACTIVITIES                                         back to top
Earn Money for your 4-H Project or Club

We have the AMAZING opportunity to continue to work MSU Concessions and this has become a GREAT way to raise money for 4-H club/project activities! We frequently commit to events throughout the year as they arise and update the SignUp Genius accordingly.

What does working MSU Concessions entail? All food is made and prepped by MSU Culinary/Concessions staff, 4-H members/parents just simply sell and serve it out of one of the concessions stands on MSU Campus (Stadium or Fieldhouse depending on the event). This is a super easy, fun and quick way to make money for your Clubs/Projects and gain some skills in the service industry! A Stand Leader and MSU Concessions staff will train you on the spot with what you need to know - No experience necessary!

4-H/MSU Fundraising Event SignUp: (NEW EVENTS ADDED)

https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10C084DA9A92AABFE3-48570182-fall

During the 2023-2024 4-H Year, 4-H Clubs/Projects earned over $19,000 total working at MSU Concession events!! If club/project members sign up for an event as a group, your club/project will get ALL the tips and a percentage of the profits from that event. If multiple projects/clubs sign up for the same game, then the tips and profits will be split between the groups. So, we highly encourage you to gather up your members, pick a game/event that your club/project will work as one group to maximize the amount of money you will earn!

Depending on the event, the day/time/hours will vary and depending on our concessions stand location, the number of people we will need per game will vary. We will need a combination of youths (minimum age of 10 with parent accompaniment) and teens/adults (ages 15+) to run cash registers.

Fundraising Opportunity - Gift Wrapping at Murdoch's!

Attention 4-H Club & Project Leaders,

Are you looking for an EASY and QUICK fundraiser for your Club or Project that allows ALL AGES?! Murdochโ€™s Ranch & Home Supply (Bozeman and Belgrade locations) need Gift Wrappers this holiday season. Customers purchase their holiday gifts from Murdochโ€™s and can have them wrapped free of charge by gift wrappers (us!) at a station up at the front of the store. Murdochโ€™s provides all the wrapping paper, bags, boxes, scissors, ribbon and more!

The wrapping service is free, but tips/donations are welcomed as ALL tips/donations during that shift go directly to the group that is working the wrapping station. Last year some clubs/projects worked and earned over $200 within a few hours. This is a great way for youth to practice their customer service skills, manners, promotional skills (wear 4-H or holiday gear) and earn some money for your club/project activities for the year.

**Please contact the appropriate store manager (below) ASAP to claim shifts โ€“ it will then be up to you as the Club/Project leader to provide 3-4 youth (plus 1 certified volunteer) per shift. Each shift will need a certified 4-H volunteer present to supervise the 4-H members. If you participate, donโ€™t forget to fill out the FundraiserSponsorshipForm.pdf to account for the money earned โ€“ you will turn it in to us at the 4-H Office with your tips to be received into your Club/Project side account.

The following shifts are available and can be split into shorter shifts (2-3 hour stents) if needed.

UNLIMITED LEADERS COUNCIL (ULC)

Gallatin County Unlimited Leaders Council is the governing body of Gallatin County 4-H and all the committees within the county 4-H program.

The monthly annual meeting of the ULC board met November 5th at the 4-H office. We kicked it off with an exciting announcement that there were already 521 active 4-H youth and 77 pending members (at that time). It was also announced that Shining Mountaineers Club was the display winner for National 4-H week with discussion around how to increase club involvement next year.

After that, Bonnie Radke gave a summary on the Fall Leadership Training where 13 Gallatin teens attended. Both Bonnie and Molly taught workshops and congratulations to Makinzey Milesnick and Hayes Holland who were awarded leadership recognition awards from the State Ambassador team.

We voted in Sarah Capp as a new member of the ULC board - welcome, Sarah! Weโ€™re still looking for a Vice President. There was an update from the Bozeman Stampede that they generously donated $25,000 to Gallatin 4-H and weโ€™ll be voting on dispersal funds at the next meeting. It was noted that the Horse projects/committee put in the majority of hours worked. There was also a shavings sale at the event organized by the Castos and discussion ensued about how to make it a more streamlined fundraiser next year with possible donations or discounted rates on shavings.

The budget subcommittee reported on the 2024-2025 Budget Proposal.

Key takeaways are *Projected Expenses = $40,675. Projected Income = $35,700

*MSU Concessions is about half what it was while Shelly was involved

*Volunteer Institute was added back into the budget as it is an every-other-year event

*National events and Rec Lab line items were omitted added was a State Event Registration Rebate to support/offest costs for all attendees and to incentivize attendance.

*Budgeted more for Project Curriculum Books

*Line item added for Summer Camp Sponsorship

We will be voting on the 4-H theme for the year at the December meeting and weโ€™re looking forward to suggestions from you! There was a motion to send $400 to donate to Montanans for 4-H to support the 2025 Legislative Breakfast which is coming up January 19-21. There was also discussion of a proposed Ice Skating day for all clubs to promote county-wide socialization. We will continue to brainstorm more ideas like this.

Hello everybody,

Welcome to the new 4-H year.  I hope you all are well and looking forward to another great year. We have a lot of new members this year and a great mix of projects being represented, which is awesome!  Our group has kids in poultry, beef, sheep, swine, horse, rabbit, livestock judging, and various other projects. We currently have a total of 25 members with an average age of 11 and almost an equal split between boys and girls.

My goal this year is for our kids to teach each other about their various projects so everyone can broaden their horizons and gain knowledge about all the great project opportunities that are available. It will also be great for the kids to learn from each other and get out of their comfort zones to teach their peers something new.  Additionally, we'll look to use our time together to ensure everyone is well prepared for a successful fair with healthy, quality animals that our club is proud to represent.

We will continue to meet at the Manhattan Bank in Churchill, in the community room downstairs, as we have in previous years. I will look to schedule our first meeting in the coming weeks before the holidays and New Year.  As soon as I have the date booked I will follow up with more information.

If anyone has any pictures of their kid's success from last year please email them to me. It would be great to include them as an update in the next monthly newsletter and to recognize all the hard work put into the projects.

Manhattan Clever Clovers Club

Meetings take place on the second Monday of each month at 6:00pm at the Bridge Church in Manhattan.

Holidays are gearing up. We have snow and everything :) Here's a little more information about our upcoming Christmas Service Project for all you Clever Clovers.

Next Event: Christmas Service Project: Food Boxes

When: Monday, December 16, 4:00pm - 6:00pm (although it might end earlier)
Where: Manhattan Presbyterian Church, 214 N Broadway St, Manhattan, MT 59741 (side entrance)

For many many years, now, both the Clever Clovers and Dry Creek Teens have helped the Manhattan Presbyterian Church with their remarkably generous gifts to families in need at Christmas time. They buy presents for the children tailored to their wish lists, wrap them, buy goodies and food for Christmas dinner, and box them for delivery. And they do it all with complete discretion. The 4H kids help at every level. This year, our club with be helping to put together the food boxes. It's festive service project and so impactful for the Manhattan community.

Hope you can be a part! Please RSVP on the event:

    CAT

Hello everyone! The next 4-H Cat Project Meeting which will be Wednesday, December 4th at 5:30pm at Alpenglow Animal Hospital.

I will get some pizza and salad for dinner (please RSVP so I know a head-count!)- if anyone has any extra juice or other drinks around and you'd like to bring any to share, we would definitely welcome them!

I'm hoping that everyone can please bring a printed photo of their cat(s) so that we can do a laminated ornament as a fun project for the holiday season.  It can always then be used in your 4-H record book after you are finished displaying it.

Please let me know if you'll be there, and whether or not you have any questions!

    Thanks,

    Julie Oghigian

    CLOVERBUDS (AGES 5-7)

**This Project is FULL and is no longer taking new enrollments.

The Cloverbud program is designed for youth ages 5-7 (age as of Oct. 1) and strives to develop age-appropriate skills and abilities by giving these young members the opportunity to explore various topics and activities in 4-H before becoming a regular youth member.

At our November meeting we did activities that are geared at learning more about 4-H and Cloverbuds! Yes we did do some broccoli ๐Ÿฅฆ painting!

We will meet once a month at the fairgrounds in the evening from 5:30-7ish on the third Wednesday of each month (except for March, where it falls on the Bozeman Schools spring break, we will meet on the 2nd Wednesday that month) from November-May.

I will send an email each month a few days ahead of time to let you know which building we are in (it can sometimes change based on availability) and what you need to bring for each meeting (this should be supplies you have at home: something like crayons, glue stick, stuffed animal etc).

If you have questions please email Erin Neil at ehagmeier@gmail.com or 406-431-7205.

    COOKING @ MSU

**This Project is FULL and is no longer taking new enrollments.

Happy Holiday Season!  Hope all of you enjoy your holidays by filling your bellies full of delicious food, and hopefully something cooked by you!

We welcome 20 new members to the project this year... WOW!  This is very exciting to see so much interest in cooking!!  We held our first meeting in November with an orientation and safety review of the kitchen. If you did not attend, then please make it a point to schedule a makeup meeting so that you are clear to cook in the kitchen this year.  You will not receive a Signup Genius email for future meetings if you have not completed this very important step. Thank you to everyone who attended the meeting.  You all did a great job cleaning up at the end of the night! We cooked some cranberry sauce to take home in mason jars, and we were so busy we forgot to take pictures.

Our next meeting is scheduled for Tuesday 12/17, 5:30 - 8:30 pm at Herrick Hall in room #120, S. 7th Avenue.  We will be celebrating the season with a variety of delicious recipes, so come prepared to get a little messy and have LOTS of fun!  Don't forget your hair tie if you need one, and make sure to leave the cooties out of the kitchen. Look for the Signup Genius email one week prior to the meeting and make sure to RSVP so that we can plan and grocery shop accordingly.

We meet once a month in the MSU Food Lab commercial kitchen located in room #120 in Herrick Hall off of S. 7th Avenue. Most meetings are held the 3rd Tuesday of each month, with a few exceptions for holidays, from 5:30 to 8:30ish pm (dates listed below).  The meetings aren't done until the kitchen is clean, so each member is expected to stay until everything is done.

We will plan one field trip and one fundraiser meeting outside of the listed dates.

    HORSELESS HORSE

The Horseless Horse November meeting took place on Monday, November 18th with a "bit" of fun and learning. The meeting started with three guest speakers to tell us about their careers in the equine industry. Katie Lynn Smith told us about teaching riding lessons and how she enjoys giving lessons to brand new riders. Kaitlyn Hoyt talked about her riding programs and helping clients to find great horses to buy. Lydia Hutchison told the members about training horses to sell, rodeo, running a family ranch, and trick riding. The members were so impressed by all the various horse activities that our speakers are involved in!

After the guest speakers and a snack, members turned their attention to the serious game of HORSE BINGO, learning new terminology so they could complete Chapter 1 in their lesson manual. Each member left with a yummy prize and new knowledge of things in the equine world (feeds, activities and events, breeds, parasites, parts of tack, etc).

The next Horseless Horse meeting will be Monday, December 16th, location TBD. Don't forget to bring an ag-related ornament to the meeting for an ornament exchange!

I hope your "mane" course of turkey, stuffing, and mashed potatoes leaves you feeling grateful!

    Exciting Breaking News:

    Monthly Open Arena Time

Beginning in January, the Horse project will begin hosting an open indoor arena one weekend a month, to allow all members (and their family members!) extra time to ride over the winter months! However, since we are required to have a 4-H volunteer present, we need parents to enroll as volunteers so they can help supervise these events! Please go to 4h.zsuite.org and enroll today! If you are already a volunteer for another project, just add horsemanship as a project.

PLEASE JOIN THE PHOTOGRAPHY BAND APP ASAP if you haven't already. It is super helpful if each member has their own log-in.  I can check with Molly to figure our how to manage families that have multiple members under the same log-in.  We use BAND for everything - meeting invites, rsvps, uploading photos for review, messages, etc. I'll explain how we use it more at our first meeting. The 4-H Office also uses BAND for county-wide posts and reminders, Let me know if you need help.

    EXPECTATIONS

We have a lot of kids that live 20-40 miles out of Bozeman, and a lot that have livestock projects, jobs, etc.  As long as we all stay engaged and in contact, we can be as flexible as needed. I'm blown away at the way our returning members sent pictures, texted questions and successes, looked after each other, and stayed active and engaged with the project even when they couldn't make meetings and walks. They did the work, they put in thought, and everyone pulled together some great photos!

My approach to guiding this group to develop an eye for composition and explore what they want to communicate with their photography. We set challenges and then collectively look at each other's photos to see what the images tell us, what might work better, what surprised us, etc. I believe that once the photographers know what they want to say, figuring out how to achieve that shot will be much easier and more fun to learn. It should be fun and exciting and inspire curiosity above all else.

Requirements: Members will be working all year long on two portfolios that will be displayed at the Fair.

    • The Process portfolio is a collection of images that document experimentation and learning. A lot of these images originated from our monthly prompts and photo walks.
    • The Personal Project Portfolio is a collection of images taken with intent based on a theme or area of exploration, that demonstrate skills and intention developed through the process portfolio. (Essentially these are your best photos, but are taken with a plan and goals, and would be what you would show to prospective customers, etc.)

We will work with the goal of having our projects wrapped up and ready for Fair by mid-May so members can focus on other projects, summer jobs, etc. Photographers are welcome to work on any additional projects and photos they wish. We will discuss doing another exhibition prior to the fair. I am open to ideas, guest photographers, or  avenues of exploration the groups wants to embark upon.

Project Books โ€“ You are welcome to pick-up and use project books, but I will not require them. We will follow our own curriculum.

    POULTRY - Market or Breed/Show

I hope all of the 4-H poultry members had a good Thanksgiving this past week and enjoyed learning about turkeys and getting to know each other at our November workshop.

Our next workshop will be our Christmas party which will be held on December 5 at the Fairgrounds Building 3.  We will begin the party at 6:30pm and wrap up around 8:00pm.  The poultry project will be providing pizza for the members and parents. Please plan to bring a holiday treat (either dessert or a side) to share as we celebrate the Christmas season.

As we move into 2025 and given our limited capacity for poultry market birds at the fair, the 4-H poultry leader's committee has decided to apply a couple of restrictions for the new year to the market part of the poultry program.  The first restriction is that if you are new to the poultry program (market side) and you have not previously participated in the market sale in another 4-H project then you will be limited to selling one market pen for poultry at the fair in July.  If you are new to the poultry market project but have previously participated in the market sale, then you will be allowed to sale two pens of poultry at the fair.  The second restriction is that we will be applying a cap to the amount of members that can participate in the market side of the poultry program this year due to our limited capacity for the market animals at fair and for processing travel of the birds.  The project will be capped at 40 members for the market side of poultry this year. We are close to this cap with current enrollment numbers, so if you are intending to participate in the market side of the poultry project, please sign up with the office as soon as possible. If you have any questions regarding these new restrictions, please reach out to one of the leaders.

Please also remember that the market poultry project members are required to attend the market workshop for poultry which will be held on January 9, 2025 from 6:30pm to 8:00pm.

Looking forward to seeing everyone on December 5!

    RABBIT - Market or Breed/Pet

The rabbit project met on November 21st for our second meeting of the year. After Sean Marble led us in the 4-H pledge, Natalie Samson and Griffin Jensen broke down the proper way to hold a rabbit and remove it from its cage, how to hold a rabbit while carrying it, and how to put it back into a cage safely. We also discussed our standard meeting protocol of rabbit health checks prior to rabbits being allowed in a meeting, what a sick rabbit looks like, and the requirement of rabbits to be in a harness and leashed when not held.

We moved to discussing S.M.A.R.T goals, formed small groups led by senior members, and members discussed their goals for this year. I look forward to reading everyone's goals at our next scheduled meeting January 16th at 6:30 (location TBD).

Our Christmas Stroll cotton candy fundraiser is December 7th this year. Come ready to represent the 4-H rabbit project and make (and maybe eat) some cotton candy!

    ROBOTICS

**This Project is FULL and is no longer taking new enrollments.

    Hello Robotics Crew!

Communication this year will primarily be through band, so I highly reccomend joining the band if you havent already. Join Here

Robotics Level 1 is still scheduled to start in February.

Level 1 = Lego Robotics & Intro to Coding

    Robotics Level 2 -

We had an introductory meeting for Level 2 in November. We discussed what we want to do this upcomming year, and the basic notes were that the members wanted to dig further into coding, circuit design, kinematics, and 3D printing. There isn't a project book for robotics 2 this year, but I will be providing binders to keep each meeting's handouts and project records in. The supplies needed for robotics 2 this year are very similar to the ones needed for robotics last year, those being:

A Windows or Apple laptop of some sort

A mouse - wired or wireless

A dedicated tote bag or old backpack - robotics components tend to get lost at home between meetings

And a couple of pens or pencils

If you need help aquiring any of those supplies, please let me know. I've got a couple spare laptops and miscelaneous supplies, and I'm happy to loan them out if needed.

Thanks y'all, and I'll see you in December!

    SEWING

**This Project is FULL and is no longer taking new enrollments.

The sewing project project meeting was packed last month and it was exciting to see everyone together. Sounds like the second Tuesday of the month is a better fit for everyones' schedules. Toni and I are incredibly grateful for all of the parents who stayed for the meeting and helped out. Sewing projects can get hectic but we had sew much fun!

Two members were new and went over the basics of the sewing machine with Toni. The rest of us made Christmas Tree pillows! It was awesome to see how unique and creative everyone got with their designs. They had to include 2 kinds of "garland" and one patch that was a shape (but it couldn't be a square). We ended up stuffing the pillows with fabric scraps to utilize all of our materials. I wish we would've gotten photos of all the members with their projects but here's a few that we were able to capture.

    December's meeting

We will have a drop-in meeting on December 10 from 5-7pm at the shop. It will be for anyone who needs extra help as well as those who didn't get to make a Christmas tree pillow but want to make one. If you got to make a tree but would like to make another one, you are welcome to come to this as well but you will be working more independently as my focus will be on those who haven't gotten to yet. Please RSVP if you are planning to come so I can have enough stations set up for you.

Thank you for your enthusiasm about sewing!

      SWINE

      Hello Swine families!

We're currently planning a  Project Orientation Meeting on Wednesday, January 15th at 6:30pm. More details to follow in our swine email.

For this, we ask that new members (1st or 2nd year) plus one parent / helper attend if possible. It is an opportunity to learn about the project requirements, some of the lingo and meet all members of the Swine Committee. We will also invite older Senior Members to speak and introduce themselves at this meeting so SAVE THE DATE.

We know that some of the breeders are having their sales earlier this year, so we are working on scheduling our Feeds Workshop for early in February. Watch for our swine project email for details! Also, start thinking about your setup for pigs if you are getting them at the earlier sales. It can be chilly and many pigs are coming to you from an indoor set up. Reach out to the swine committee if you have concerns or questions.

Questions? Contact the Swine Committee at gallatinswineproject@gmail.com

          VET SCIENCE

          Hello Vet Science Project Members!!

We will have our first meeting December 11th at 6pm at the Gallatin 4-H Extension office. In the attached document I've provided a link to join the Vet Science Band app which will be my main source for communication (check your emails for the document and links).

I realize our members have other activities and obligations outside of this project, so I'll be posting a poll in the coming days to see what day of the month works for the majority of the group.  Typically, workshops will be held after school and/or on Saturdays and pending the instructor's availability.

I look forward to meeting you all and working with you on making sure all members needs and expectations are met!

          Best,

          Monika Johnson
