Enrollment for the 2024-2025 4-H Year opened back on October 1st
Re-enrolling members and volunteers  SHOULD be enrolled by Oct. 31st and starting November 1st, a per month late fee will be added to the enrollment fee.

NEW members technically have until March 1st to enroll in Gallatin 4-H, however many Clubs and Projects begin meeting in late/October and early November, and some have enrollment caps so get enrolled ASAP!

ALL members and volunteers need to be enrolled and paid to be considered active/certified in order to be allowed to participate in 4-H youth meetings/events/activities and covered under our 4-H insurance.
Due to facility and/or leader and project capacity, the following 4-H Projects are NOW FULL and are no longer accepting enrollments for the 2024-2025 year:
  • Cloverbuds w/ leader Erin
  • Cooking @ MSU w/ leader Stephanie
  • Dog Obedience w/ leader Shawnna
  • Sewing (All Levels) w/ leader Laura
  • Robotics Level 1 w/ leader Joey (Level 2 is by leader approval only)
  • Baking @ MSU w/ leader Erin
  • Knitting/Crochet w/ leaders Jeanette & Phyllis
  • Welding w/ leader Brenda
We are very excited to see that these projects were so popular! We apologize for the inconvenience if you were interested in enrolling in one of these projects, but this shows how important it is to enroll sooner than later when the new 4-H year opens. These projects have now been "hidden" on ZSuite to prevent additional enrollments. **If you are interested in being added to a waitlist in case any member drops the project, please email gallatin4h@montana.edu

CHANGES in the 2024-2025 4-H Year

  • Dog Obedience Project – Youth members now must be at least 8 years old (age as of Oct. 1st) to participate. Cloverbuds ages 5-7 will no longer be allowed to participate due to the size of project and for safety of animals and kids.
  • Saddle Stars Club - This Club is in need of a new Club Leader! Tamara Knappenberger is stepping down as the Club Leader this year. **If a new Leader is not identified ASAP, youth members will need to select another Club to participate in.

Seeking 2024-2025 4-H Year Themes

We need your help this year! We are seeking ideas for our 2024-2025 4-H Year
(& 2025 4-H/FFA Fair) Theme phrase!

We need a good, catchy phrase to use for marketing and logo purposes throughout the year. We are striving to be more inclusive (as we have both 4-H and FFA members at our Fair), so please refrain from using "4-H" in the phrase.
  • Think about how this year/fair will be 2025 - a quarter of a century! That's an exciting milestone.
  • Think of words or characteristics that embody 4-H and FFA (growing, learning, exploring)
  • Puns or rhyming are welcomed!
  • Use Google/Pinterest to get inspiration
  • Theme phrases need to be fun and easy to use for Club Display booths, possible merchandise or stickers, advertising, etc.
Submit your ideas via this form: https://forms.gle/dbiNVKaiG4NT55V58 by November 15th!

Examples of themes from past years:
  • "Welcome to 4-H Fairadise" (paradise/luau)
  • "Discover the Treasure of 4-H" (compass/treasure map)
  • "Rising Above the Rest" (hot air balloons)
  • "Mountains of Adventure"
  • "Rooted in 4-H"
  • "THIS is 4-H Country"
Thank YOU for a GREAT year!

Thanking the "Legends of our Community"

Earlier this year at our 2024 “Legends of the Sea” Gallatin County 4-H Summer Camp, teen counselors and youth campers came together for a community outreach project. They wanted to show their appreciation for the “Legends of our Community” by creating thank you posters for various first responder entities around Gallatin County. Posters were then hand delivered by some of those counselors and campers.

Counselor Makinzey Milesnick shares about the delivery experience below:

“They all really appreciated it and were very excited to see us! The Central Valley Fire District told us about possibilities of working with them to set up CPR and Stop The Bleed classes. Two EMTs were kind enough to take a picture and show us their equipment and area! I believe they all really enjoyed the thanks and appreciation! We even caught the Gallatin County Sheriff's Office Sheriff Springer in his office on a day off, which just shows how hard working and dedicated they are to our community. He told us about their future plans, possibilities of tours around their office, the detention center, and there oncoming Search and Rescue building and shared some Gallatin County Sherif merch! The Police Chief of Manhattan Police Department was very excited and showed us his cruiser! Manhattan Volunteer Fire Department took a picture with us with all of their volunteers! Bozeman Fire Department showed us there station and told us about a call they had just come back from! Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks (Region 3) talked with us and asked questions about our projects! Everyone was very kind and excited to see us. I think we should do this again!”

National 4-H Week Display Winner

Congratulations to our winning 4-H Club, the Shining Mountaineers, for their amazing promotional efforts during National 4-H Week, Oct. 6-12, 2024! They decorated a local business in Belgrade and spent an afternoon handing out free ice cream to community members. Way to show off your 4-H spirit!

CAN THE GRIZ 2024

For those who don't know, Gallatin 4-H Agent Molly is an MSU Alumni (GO CATS) and is VERY competitive when it comes to anything involving our rivals the Griz.

The annual "Can the Griz" Food Drive is a friendly off-field competition between the Montana State University Bobcats and Bozeman Community, against the University of Montana Grizzlies and Missoula Community, to see who can raise the most food and money in the two weeks leading up to the annual Brawl of the Wild!

This year, we are encouraging any and all Gallatin 4-H Clubs, Projects and individual members to participate in this annual fundraiser! 2024 marks the 25th year of the Annual Can the Griz Food Drive!

Gallatin County 4-H will have a non-perishable food drop-off bin located within our 4-H Office (903 N. Black Ave, Bozeman) during the duration of the fundraiser, November 9-21, 2024. Our office is open weekly, Monday - Friday (8am-5pm). All items are “due” to our office by November 21st. See food item wishlist attached.

***The 4-H Club or Project that collects the MOST (pounds) food will be awarded PRIZE MONEY to their 4-H Club/Project financial account! Items will be separated by Club/Project when donated and weighed to determine winners. The office will then donate the food to the Gallatin Valley Food Bank directly at the conclusion of the contest to add to the Bozeman Community’s (and CATS🐱) grand total to hopefully beat Missoula (and the Griz)🐻

All donations collected throughout these two weeks help stock the shelves of the Gallatin Valley Food Bank as well as MSU’s campus food pantry, the Bounty of the Bridgers well into the next year.

These trainings are intended to be volunteer growth and development opportunities, just like professional development trainings are in your place of employment. This Fall training will provide 4-H volunteers the opportunity to reconnect, refresh on skills, update resources, share ideas, and prepare for the new 4-H year.

RSVP Required: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10C084DA9A92AABFE3-52870929-fall

  • Volunteers that attend will also earn a free week-pass to the 2025 Big Sky Country State Fair.

Agenda: (see flyer above)

*Note: If you participated in the Real Colors training with MSU Specialist Katie Weaver at our Winter Workshop back in January 2024, the Fall "Colors" of Leadership workshop session from 10am-12pm will be the same. You are welcome to leave early or go through the training again!

    What:Fall for Volunteering” Volunteer Training

Where: Gallatin County 4-H Office (903 N. Black Ave., Bozeman)

Earn Money for your 4-H Project or Club

We have the AMAZING opportunity to continue to work MSU Concessions and this has become a GREAT way to raise money for 4-H club/project activities! We frequently commit to events throughout the year as they arise and update the SignUp Genius accordingly.

What does working MSU Concessions entail? All food is made and prepped by MSU Culinary/Concessions staff, 4-H members/parents just simply sell and serve it out of one of the concessions stands on MSU Campus (Stadium or Fieldhouse depending on the event). This is a super easy, fun and quick way to make money for your Clubs/Projects and gain some skills in the service industry! A Stand Leader and MSU Concessions staff will train you on the spot with what you need to know - No experience necessary!

4-H/MSU Fundraising Event SignUp: (NEW EVENTS ADDED)

    https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10C084DA9A92AABFE3-48570182-fall

During the 2023-2024 4-H Year, 4-H Clubs/Projects earned over $19,000 total working at MSU Concession events!! If club/project members sign up for an event as a group, your club/project will get ALL the tips and a percentage of the profits from that event. If multiple projects/clubs sign up for the same game, then the tips and profits will be split between the groups. So, we highly encourage you to gather up your members, pick a game/event that your club/project will work as one group to maximize the amount of money you will earn!

Depending on the event, the day/time/hours will vary and depending on our concessions stand location, the number of people we will need per game will vary. We will need a combination of youths (minimum age of 10 with parent accompaniment) and teens/adults (ages 15+) to run cash registers.

    UNLIMITED LEADERS COUNCIL (ULC)

Gallatin County Unlimited Leaders Council is the governing body of Gallatin County 4-H and all the committees within the county 4-H program.

ULC meets the first Tuesday of every month, with our next meeting on

November 5th at 6pm at the Extension Office.

Greetings from Gallatin County Unlimited Leaders Council (ULC)!! We met on October 6th and kicked off the meeting with the roll call question ‘ What is your favorite Fall food?’  There were some tasty answers given by the committee members, and we hope your enjoying your favorite foods as well!

We reviewed last month’s meeting minutes and financial reports.  It was discussed that the Annual Operating budget would be drafted later in the month by the Budget Committee, however, all ULC committee members were welcomed and encouraged to attend.  The Annual Operating budget will be reviewed and discussed at the next meeting on November 5th.

Molly reported on the following information: 1.) enrollment updates (Note: w/in the first week of enrollment opening on October 1st, over 100 new members had already signed up!!  This should be another great year.), 2.) club/project changes (e.g., addition of new projects, leaders, etc…), 3.) New 4-H Family Orientation night to be held on October 29, and 4.) the purpose for a survey, “Get to Know You”, that will be emailed along with other pertinent volunteer information to Gallatin County 4-H volunteers.  She is kindly asking ALL volunteers take the time to complete the survey.  She would like to learn more about you, beyond your duties as a volunteer to even more effectively due the amazing job she does.

Our youth Ambassador, Bonnie Radkie spoke at her last ULC meeting about the exciting Montana 4-H Leadership Training that will be held on November 1st – 3rd in Billings.  The theme this year will be to join other 4-H members in the jungle for the Game of UmholiWord Trivia: Umholi is the Zulu word for a person who rules or guides or inspires others; leader, leadership.  A big ‘Thank You’ to Bonnie for her time on the ULC as a youth Ambassador representative along with Erica Hastings (Ambassador) and Nicole Reeves (4-H Member).  Their term limit has expired, and they will be missed!

Another important part of ULC’s October meeting was the election of new committee members as each year there are volunteers whose 3-year term limit expires.  ULC consists of ten (10) volunteer positions which is comprised of volunteer leaders from various Clubs and Projects, and four (4) youth volunteer positions, of which two are Ambassadors and two are 4-H Members.  It was with great excitement existing ULC members voted in three (3) new committee volunteers, Sarah Brechbuhler, Lindsey Klebenow, and Ashley Casto.  They bring with them to the ULC great experience, much enthusiasm, and fresh ideas.  ULC also voted in Laura Fisher as Secretary.  Welcome to ALL and we thank you in advance for your volunteering commitment to our 4-H youth!  A big ‘Thank You’ to Aaron Pruitt, Tamara Knappenberger (President), Toni Berger (Secretary), Tiffany Togstad, Amy Juliano, and Laura and Jason Andren for their volunteer services on the ULC as committee members and as officers.  Their term limit has expired, and they will be greatly missed!

The ULC Vice-President position remains open along with all four Youth positions.  We highly encourage our youth to consider applying for the vacancies.  For application and position information please contact Molly at molly.yurdana@montana.edu)

2023-2024 Award Night recap included feedback that member moments presented this year were terrific and it gave younger members excitement to get more involved seeing what their peers’ experiences included.  It was fun having the teenagers run the show, as it kept it real and at times silly!  Apparently the ‘Penguin’ song was a big hit and the ice cream, well of course it was too.

Lastly, we encourage ALL clubs and projects to take advantage of fundraising opportunities through concessions at MSU.  There are a variety of dates and events this Fall and Winter.  Look for football and basketball games, and concerts for sign-up opportunities.  These are fun events to work!!

Attendance: Molly Yurdana, Monika Johnson, Randy Radke, Sarah Brechbuhler, Ashley Casto, Lindsey Klebenow, Toni Berger, Joey Knappenberger, Bonnie Radke (Youth), Laura Fisher

    Hello Club Members!

Thank you to everyone who showed up for our October meeting, it was pleasantly cramped but worked out so very well. Thank you for bearing with us for such a long meeting and getting some much needed agenda items done. We should have everything smoothed out and in place by the December meeting.

     - We reviewed how the Shining Mountaineers have structured in the past and what we feel is best moving forward. We did forget to discuss the option of Kami running the Cloverbuds as a small "committee" group when all the other committees meet. That is still in the air if Kami is still willing to do this.

    - I need to know which parents would like to be in the parent leadership group. Please email me with your commitment level on that.

     - We will have 4 committees with 4 committee chairs: Education, Fundraising (chairman will be the elected treasurer), Recreation & Community Service. These chair positions do have nominations right now. If you did not make the meeting and want to run for a committee chair, please email me and I will get it on the list.

    - We did nominations for parliament positions. If you were not here and want to be nominated, please email me and I will put you on the list.

    - Parliament and committee chair positions will officially be voted on at our November meeting. You must be present at that meeting and attend 75% of all club meetings to be voted in.

-There will be a sign up genius sent out so that everyone can sign up for snacks for each month's meeting.

    - Please sign up on our band app to be included in most communications. I have attached the agenda with the QR code for your access to that.

    - Concessions for men and womens basketball are ready to be signed up for and doing it as a club can benefit us financially. Please consider signing up for that. Shawna Oostema is taking charge on that front.

    - The Belgrade Community Coalition reached out and asked if we'd participate in the Belgrade Festival of Lights. I'm waiting for them to respond with more information so that we may all decide as a group.

    - All Members, please bring record books to each meeting. We have a lot of littles and newcomers who will greatly benefit from our older kids with record book keeping. Hopefully at the end of each meeting, the older kids can help the younger kids.

I know this is very loaded! It'll die down as we get a little more coordinated. Our next meeting is November 11th from 6-8pm.

    AMBASSADORS / TEEN LEADERSHIP

    Hello!

Thank you for enrolling in the 4-H Teen Leadership Project for the 2024-2025 4-H Year. I am very excited to be your Project Leader again this year! As the 4-H Agent, I may not be able to say I have favorites, but I can have preferences – and the Teens are my PREFERRED group to work with😉

I took over the project last year and we essentially started from a clean slate. This year, I am actively working to make our Teen Leadership system more structured with clear goals. Teen Leadership will be run as a project, open to anyone ages 14-19, but the official County Ambassadors will be determined by application and interview only (see more info below). My goal for the Teen Leadership project is to provide teen members tangible skills to improve and increase their leadership abilities, confidence, involvement in our county program. I will intentionally be bringing in a few guests to our monthly meetings throughout the year to work with us on specific skills and networking opportunities within our community.

Our FIRST Teen Leadership Project meeting will be held on Sunday, November 17th from 2:30pm - approx. 5:00pm at our 4-H Office. Meetings will not always been on Sundays, or this long in duration, but we have some exciting things planned for this first meeting.

    First Meeting Agenda:

    • Arrive at 2:30pm – icebreakers & eat food!
    • 3:00pm-4:00pm – we will be tuning into the first Montana 4-H Leadership Academy of the season hosted by the new 2024-2025 State 4-H Ambassador Officers
    • 4:00pm - approx. 5:00pm – Team building activities

    CAMP COUNSELORS

PROJECT CHANGES: The 2024-2025 4-H year will be the  LAST year that 13 year olds will be allowed to serve as Camp Counselors. Beginning next 4-H Year (2025-2026), youth must be 14 years old and older (age as of Oct. 1st) to serve as a Camp Counselor. Camp Counselor applications will be released with Enrollment in October and due Nov. 1st for those age-eligible and interested.

Camp Counselor Application is linked to our website here: https://www.montana.edu/extension/gallatin/4hforms.html

    Next Steps:

    • Submit your Camp Counselor Application (attached) to our office by FRIDAY, November 1st. It’s a fillable PDF, so you may email the completed application back to us if that is easier.
    • You will then be required to complete a brief interview with the Camp Directors and small panel of community members.

    Mark Your Calendars!

    • The first Camp Counselor meeting of the year will be Wednesday, December 18th from 6:00pm-8:30pm at the 4-H Office! More information to follow after interviews are completed.
    • The 2025 Camp dates are 08/01/2025 – 08/05/2025 at Yellowstone Alliance Adventures (YAA) – add these dates to your calendar now!

**Although it is not ideal, with such a large number of applicants and the location/cabins we are allotted for the week of camp, we will not be able to accept everyone as a Counselor. Please come to your Counselor interview prepared - treat this like an actual job interview where you’re competing for a spot. The interview panel will be evaluating members on their applications (completeness, quality of answers) and interviews (thoughtfulness, quality of answers, attire, body language, etc). Remember that being a Camp Counselor is a privilege as you are expected to be a role model, a leader and a team player. We are looking for Counselors that are motivated, focused, respectful, creative and punctual. Moreover, Counselors that are active in camp fundraising efforts and can attend the majority of the meetings throughout the year.

Co-directors Tiffany Togstad and 4-H Agent Molly are looking forward to a great year of counselor meetings and working with you all.  If you have any questions, please contact me at molly.yurdana@montana.edu

      Sincerely your Camp Directors,

      Molly Yurdana (4-H Agent)

Welcome to the new 4-H year!

We are excited are looking forward to this year and getting to know all of our new (and established) project members!  I encourage you all to brainstorm for our first meeting so that we can come up with a lot of fun ideas for activities and meeting topics for our project members, and maybe even a few that involve our community as well.

Our first meeting will be at 5:30pm on Wednesday, November 6th, if that works for everyone.  If you bring your project book and record books, we can start going over their contents and keep everything updated.  I hope this year we can help all members and their parents with record book deadlines by taking a short time to fill them out during our meetings each month for the activities we have had in school, community, 4-H etc throughout the previous month.

I will likely have a couple of pizzas or a pasta dish and salad (please let me know if there are any dietary restrictions and I will do my best to keep them in consideration) for dinner, parents are welcome and encouraged to join in for dinner (and in project meetings/activities) as well.  We hope this makes having our monthly meetings around dinnertime a bit easier for everyone.  I will need RSVPs so I know how much to get.  For following meetings, we hope everyone will consider a potluck type of meal for the group. Remember to mark your calendars for the 1st Wednesday of each month as we will generally have our monthly meetings on that day.  This is of course pending what works best for everyone though, since we want all who are interested to be able to attend.

As an introduction, my name is Julie Oghigian (O-Heeg-ian).  I am a small animal veterinarian and veterinary practice owner in Bozeman who worked in the past for almost 7 years as a feline-only/cat vet.  Most call me "Doctor Julie."  We currently have a variety pack of pets at home, as is common with most veterinary families.  Our indoor cats, who belong to our 2 daughters, are Mango and Fidget, both neutered male Devon Rex cats (my super cat-allergic husband, Matt, seems fine with this breed).  I'm sure you will meet them at some point as they regularly come to work with me and ride with me during school drop off/pick up.  We also adopted a litter of 3 semi-feral barn kitties from the Humane Society- all black and white (I call them the "squad car kitties"), Thunder, Lightning and Flower.  That is in addition to our labrador retrievers who we compete with at a number of mostly AKC events, our horses Diva and Peanut, and 3 packing llamas.

Looking forward to a great year in the 4-H cat project! Welcome aboard!

      Thanks,

      Julie Oghigian

      CLOVERBUDS (AGES 5-7)

**This Project is FULL and is no longer taking new enrollments.

The Cloverbud program is designed for youth ages 5-7 (age as of Oct. 1) and strives to develop age-appropriate skills and abilities by giving these young members the opportunity to explore various topics and activities in 4-H before becoming a regular youth member.

At our November meeting (11/20) we will do activities that are geared at learning more about 4-H and Cloverbuds!

We will meet once a month at the fairgrounds in the evening from 5:30-7ish on the third Wednesday of each month (except for March, where it falls on the Bozeman Schools spring break, we will meet on the 2nd Wednesday that month) from November-May.

I will send an email each month a few days ahead of time to let you know which building we are in (it can sometimes change based on availability) and what you need to bring for each meeting (this should be supplies you have at home: something like crayons, glue stick, stuffed animal etc).

Cloverbuds will meet on the 3rd Wednesday of the month starting in November. See you then!

If you have questions please email Erin Neil at ehagmeier@gmail.com or 406-431-7205.

      COOKING @ MSU

**This Project is FULL and is no longer taking new enrollments.

Howdy & welcome to the 2024-25 4-H year and Cooking @ MSU!  My name is Stephanie Grace, and I am going into my 7th year as the Cooking @ MSU project leader.  Although I no longer have a kiddo in 4-H, I still volunteer because I love everything that 4-H offers our youth, and I truly enjoy teaching kids one of the most important life skills... COOKING!

We meet once a month in the MSU Food Lab commercial kitchen located in room #120 in Herrick Hall off of S. 7th Avenue. Most meetings are held the 3rd Tuesday of each month, with a few exceptions for holidays, from 5:30 to 8:30ish pm (dates listed below).  The meetings aren't done until the kitchen is clean, so each member is expected to stay until everything is done.

We will cook a meal and eat at each meeting, unless otherwise noted in the Signup Genius each member will receive beforehand which will detail what's planned.  We cook anything from homemade pasta to sushi.  It's all hands-on and independent!

We will plan one field trip and one fundraiser meeting outside of the listed dates.

      First Meeting: 11/12/24

      12/17/24

      1/21/25

      2/18/25

      3/25/25

      4/15/25

      5/20/25

At our first meeting, at least one parent/guardian needs to stay for the first half hour to take note of important details about the project. After that, they are welcome to leave, and I will continue our meeting with the projects members. We will not cook a meal that evening, but each member will get to cook a little special something to take home. A meal will be provided so that nobody goes hungry.

We will spend most of our time getting familiar with the kitchen, reviewing safe food handling procedures, and learning a bit about the kitchen equipment. We’ll also start planning things to cook and where we want to go for a field trip.

Looking forward to a fun filled year whipping up some deliciousness!

Friday, January 3 at 9:00 am we are touring the West Paws facility, and I think it's going to be super cool!

The 4-H office sent an email on Oct 24 regarding concessions.  Please take a few minutes to look at the opportunities available and sign up to help.  This is a great way to earn money for your clubs or projects (DOG PROJECT🐕) and a super fun time meeting other 4-H families!

      PHOTOGRAPHY

It's already a new year of 4-H Photography! Enrollment is still open but we have a few photo opportunities coming up fast and I want to make sure everyone is looped in. (PS - If you haven't paid your fees or finished enrollment, please do so)

First –  Welcome everyone! We have a lot of new members this year and an incredible crew of returning photographers! I can't wait to see everyone!!!!

      BAND APP

PLEASE JOIN THE PHOTOGRAPHY BAND APP ASAP if you haven't already. It is super helpful if each member has their own log-in.  I can check with Molly to figure our how to manage families that have multiple members under the same log-in.  We use BAND for everything - meeting invites, rsvps, uploading photos for review, messages, etc. I'll explain how we use it more at our first meeting. The 4-H Office also uses BAND for county-wide posts and reminders, Let me know if you need help.

Join our ‘GC 4H Photography’ group on the BAND app.

      COMMUNICATIONS:

FYI - BAND or TEXT (307) 214-8336 is the best way to reach me. Emails get buried, so if you email me, text me to look for it. I commute to Big Sky almost daily for work and my schedule is variable, as is cell service, but if photographers text me I will do my best to get back to them as soon as possible.

PHOTO SHOOT – Sunday, November 3 2-6pm (location TBD)

The Dog Project has asked us to help them take a few photos of the members working with Therapy dogs  to create a calendar. The exact location and details are dependent on weather. Please let me know ASAP if you are interested in participating.  I have Bridger and Lydia signed up so far.

      EXPECTATIONS

We have a lot of kids that live 20-40 miles out of Bozeman, and a lot that have livestock projects, jobs, etc.  As long as we all stay engaged and in contact, we can be as flexible as needed. I'm blown away at the way our returning members sent pictures, texted questions and successes, looked after each other, and stayed active and engaged with the project even when they couldn't make meetings and walks. They did the work, they put in thought, and everyone pulled together some great photos!

My approach to guiding this group to develop an eye for composition and explore what they want to communicate with their photography. We set challenges and then collectively look at each other's photos to see what the images tell us, what might work better, what surprised us, etc. I believe that once the photographers know what they want to say, figuring out how to achieve that shot will be much easier and more fun to learn. It should be fun and exciting and inspire curiosity above all else.

Requirements: Members will be working all year long on two portfolios that will be displayed at the Fair.

      • The Process portfolio is a collection of images that document experimentation and learning. A lot of these images originated from our monthly prompts and photo walks.
      • The Personal Project Portfolio is a collection of images taken with intent based on a theme or area of exploration, that demonstrate skills and intention developed through the process portfolio. (Essentially these are your best photos, but are taken with a plan and goals, and would be what you would show to prospective customers, etc.)

We will work with the goal of having our projects wrapped up and ready for Fair by mid-May so members can focus on other projects, summer jobs, etc. Photographers are welcome to work on any additional projects and photos they wish. We will discuss doing another exhibition prior to the fair. I am open to ideas, guest photographers, or  avenues of exploration the groups wants to embark upon.

Project Books – You are welcome to pick-up and use project books, but I will not require them. We will follow our own curriculum.

      POULTRY - Market or Breed/Show

Welcome to the new 4-H year for the poultry project!

October was a busy month for our poultry project members.  We kicked the month off with nine of our prior year members attending the Rocky Mountain Poultry Association Fall Show in Great Falls, MT held on October 5, 2024.  Our members did a great job showcasing their showmanship skills with three of the youth members receiving awards in the Grand and Reserve showman categories and two of our leaders also received the Grand and Reserve Adult Showmanship awards.  Our members also showcased their birds which placed very well throughout all three of the shows held that day.  Thank you to everyone who represented Gallatin County 4-H at this state level event!

Following the show was our poultry project open house held on October 10, 2024.  We welcomed returning project members and had several new members join us at the first workshop of the year.  Our youth leader committee members, Madison Oostema and Moriah Colton, lead several icebreaker games to help us get to know each other and we answered several questions regarding our project.

Our final event held in October was the distribution of the processed poultry that was donated to the Montana Veterans Meat Locker by our wonderful buyers at the 4-H market sale and from our 4-H project members.  Thank you to our leader Judy Brownell for helping organize the event and to Tatem Chaffins, Zoey Chaffins, Clara Miller, Ezra Miller, Kamy Miller and Madison Oostema for helping pass out over 2,500 pounds of meat to our local veterans and families in the area on October 19.

For November we will have our next poultry project workshop on November 7, 2024 from 6:30pm to 8:00pm. The workshop will be held at the fairgrounds and please watch for signs or emails regarding the building placement.  If you have any questions regarding the project prior to this date, please contact Shawna Oostema at 406-580-7819. Please save the following dates for future workshops: December 5, January 9, February 13, March 13, April 10, April 26, and June 12.

We will also have a special fundraising event in November as we are planning on working the MSU Football concession stand on November 9, 2024 from 10am to 4pm.  This fundraising event will help us provide several fun awards for the upcoming fair in July and will help with judging costs.  Youth members over the age of 12 and parents are encouraged to help with this event as we will need both runners and cashiers. Please let Shawna know by November 5, 2024 if you can help with the concession stand event.

      QUILTING   *new project this year!

Quilting is a really, really fun lifelong skill to learn, whether you learn for your own use or as the potential way to make money.  I would like to invite anyone who is interested in learning to quilt or to improve their quilting skills to be a part of this project this year.

My name is Ginny Francis. I was in 4-H from the time that I was very young, and have been a 4-H leader for a long time. I am a retired Family and Consumer Sciences Teacher.  Quilting is one of my many hobbies, probably my favorite right now.

      UPCOMING MEETING:

We will be having an informational/planning meeting for those signed up for quilting.  I am very excited to get together to plan our year of workshops. This meeting will be held on Thursday, Nov. 21 at 6:30pm at the Extension Office Conference Room.

Please bring ideas for when you can meet, a pen or pencil and paper or notebook.

If you have questions, please call or text me at 406.581.6843.

Welcome to the 2024-2025 4-H year! We are excited to meet our new members and reconnect with those returning. Please make sure to enroll in the rabbit project as soon as possible!

Right now our rabbit committee consists of myself, Cody Brownell, and Jim Murphy. We need more committee members! If you would like to join us please let me know. Many hands make for less work - and more fun.

Our meetings will be held the 3rd Thursday of every month at 6:30 pm, with the exception of December. They will run for an hour to an hour and a half in length. If you must drop off your 4-H member, please make sure to return within an hour.

Our next meeting will be Thursday, November 21st at 6:30 pm at the Gallatin County Fairgrounds.

      MARK YOUR CALENDARS!!

December 7th is the annual Christmas Stroll and our Cotton Candy Fundraiser. Plan on coming to help make and sell cotton candy! It's a great experience for the kids and helps pay for our judges and prizes for the fair.

I look forward to seeing as many of you as possible on October 17th!

      SEWING

**This Project is FULL and is no longer taking new enrollments.

We're thrilled that so many of you were interested in sewing this year! The project has grown from 5 members three years ago to over 20! The sewing project is now full and myself and Toni Berger are the leaders of this project.

We had our first meeting this past week but have decided, due to scheduling conflicts, to have the meetings on the second Tuesday of the month from 5-7pm moving forward. Our next meeting will be Tuesday, November 12. Meetings are held at 2105 Lea Ave, Unit A.

This year, our goal is to invest in a bunch of the same machines to make teaching easier and are asking members to sign up for concession shifts to help fund the purchase of the new machines.

I'm honored to be your sewing leader again this year and am so grateful to receive a Project Leader of the Year award last year. My goal is to continue to support your interests in sewing and set you up for success so that you can feel confident making whatever your heart desires.

      Thanks again

If you are new to the project, don’t worry about archery equipment at this time, 4-H has plenty of bows to get you started. If you are a continuing shooter, keep practicing and we’ll see everyone in December.

We are hoping to get a couple of other volunteers trained in December.  Anyone who would like to help facilitate please reach out to Randy at gv4harchery@gmail.com. VET SCIENCE

I’m excited for the 2024-25 Vet Science project this year that will include classroom education, workshops/field trips, and hands-on activities!

Meetings take place on the second Wednesday of each month from 6:00-7:00pm at the 4-H Gallatin County Extension Office (which is being confirmed) unless a workshop or field trip is scheduled in lieu of classroom time.  This day may be adjusted based on member feedback.  I’d like to get a day on the books that will work for everyone!

If you’ve registered for the project, I’ll add you to the Vet Science Band App which will be the main form of communication.  Be on the look out for an invite!

Get ready for an exciting year and mark your calendars for the upcoming dates:

            • November (Date/Time TBD) Field trip to an equine facility
            • December 11 @ 6-7pm (Gallatin County 4-H Office)- Monthly meeting, 4-H Gallatin County Extension Office. We’ll learn about animal skeletal structures and put that knowledge to use afterwards by dissecting owl ‘puke’ pellets!!

            WELDING  *new project this year!

**This Project is FULL and is no longer taking new enrollments.

            Hello!

Since this class is so big I'm going to split it into two groups- 13 and under and 14 and up.

13 and under will be MIG welding

14 and up will be stick welding and MIG welding.

We will have classes on Saturdays

            13 and under 9am-11am

            14 and up from 12-2pm

November and December will be only one class but after that we will try for 2 classes a month. November class will be the 16th and December class will be the 14th.

As for needed PPE/equipment- whelpers aka welding pliers, leather gloves (not the big bulky welding gloves but driver style), clear safety glasses, level 3 or darker tinted safety glasses, cotton clothes that can get filthy and ruined, boots (work, cowboy or muck style) and a hair tie if you have long hair.
