4-H Youth Project Awards

4-H Project Award Nominations

In mid-August mailed out paper letters to 4-H youth who have been nominated for 2024 Project Awards. **If you received this letter, please make sure to follow the requirements stated in the letter and turn in your updated record book(s) back to the office by Friday, September 6th for a final review of completion. With both record-keeping and interview skills being equally important to develop in our youth, the two areas were scored and totaled to determine award nominees. Members that scored 80% or higher were nominated to be considered for a Project Award(s). *Please note that nomination does not guarantee an award.
Even if you don’t get nominated, please remember that record keeping and interview skills are some of the many life skills we are teaching youth in 4-H. Practicing keeping accurate and updated records and speaking to an adult about your learning experiences will help in your future projects and when applying for jobs/scholarships/college. Be sure to still update your records books with all your project information/financial records/ribbons/etc. up through the current date to “close out” your records for this 4-H Year.

Outstanding 4-H Member of the Year – Achievement Journals
Each year Gallatin County 4-H Foundation awards monetary scholarships to outstanding 4-H members. These monetary scholarships are generously sponsored by the Harris and Elizabeth Kirk Trust. The number and dollar value of the scholarships vary yearly based on the number of qualified applicants, as well as the availability of funds. **Any youth (ages 8+) can apply via the Achievement Journal, and the monetary scholarships are unrestricted funds – so they can be used for whatever you’d like! The 4-H Member of the Year Award Winners are to be recognized for their outstanding achievements in 4-H and is determined off of a points-based scoring system. To be eligible for this award, youth need to fill out this Achievement Journal to the best of their ability: AchievementJournalfillable.pdf (montana.edu). Achievement Journals are due to our office on Sept. 6th by 5pm.

2024 4-H Summer Camp Recap

“LAND HO!” We reached the end of our 2024 “Legends of the Sea” Gallatin 4-H Camp voyage.

We dove into Day 1 of 4-H Camp with cabin bonding, large group icebreakers, making cabin flags and Counselor skits! Day 2 we were on the lookout for fun themed activities, including Human Battleship Game, a hands-on Sea Creature Science lesson, pirate Map-Making, creating our own Message in a Bottle and Paracord. Keeping with our theme, we had our first Camp Movie Night and watched Moana while snacking on root beer floats and pirates booty crackers!
Ahoy Day 3! The 4-H Camp voyage continued with Zip-Line, Pirate Jeopardy, pirate hat/hook/eyepatch crafting, tie-dye, sea diorama creations and a swing/line dance workshop! The Battle of the Sea Games (during a rainstorm - how fitting) included Ship Shore, Tug-a-War, Counselor water balloon fight, and Sharks & Minnows. We ended our trek with our annual 4-H Camp Dance - the moves were LEGENDARY!

Thank you to the 85 youth explorers, our Crew of 24 teen counselors, and 4 adult Ship Captains (chaperones) that joined us for a great week! HUGE thank you to our 2024 Camp Sponsors (pictured below) for their support!

Earn Money for your 4-H Project or Club

We have the AMAZING opportunity to continue to work MSU Concessions and this has become a GREAT way to raise money for 4-H club/project activities! Please see the link below for the 2024 Fall Fundraising concessions events at MSU! We frequently commit to events throughout the year as they arise and update the SignUp Genius accordingly.

What does working MSU Concessions entail? All food is made and prepped by MSU Culinary/Concessions staff, 4-H members/parents just simply sell and serve it out of one of the concessions stands on MSU Campus (Stadium or Fieldhouse depending on the event). This is a super easy, fun and quick way to make money for your Clubs/Projects and gain some skills in the service industry! A Stand Leader and MSU Concessions staff will train you on the spot with what you need to know - No experience necessary!

Fall Fundraising Event SignUp:

During the 2023-2024 4-H Year, 4-H Clubs/Projects earned over $19,000 total working at MSU Concession events!! If club/project members sign up for an event as a group, your club/project will get ALL the tips and a percentage of the profits from that event. If multiple projects/clubs sign up for the same game, then the tips and profits will be split between the groups. So, we highly encourage you to gather up your members, pick a game/event that your club/project will work as one group to maximize the amount of money you will earn!

Depending on the event, the day/time/hours will vary and depending on our concessions stand location, the number of people we will need per game will vary. We will need a combination of youths (minimum age of 10 with parent accompaniment) and teens/adults (ages 15+) to run cash registers.

    DOG OBEDIENCE

PROJECT CHANGES in the 2024-2025 year: Youth members now must be at least 8 years old (age as of Oct. 1st) to participate. Cloverbuds ages 5-7 will no longer be allowed to participate due to the size of project and for safety of animals and kids.

Thank you to all of you for another wonderful year in the dog obedience project!  I know I enjoyed it, and I hope you all did too.  Everyone did really well at the fair competition, I wish I had some pictures of our show to share. Keep working with your dogs.  This is the time when you can really perfect the commands we learned so that you can be rock stars in class next year!  This is NOT the time to let them get rusty and lazy, there's never a good time for that!

Please jump on the opportunity to raise money for our project by signing up for concessions when those emails come out from the 4-H office.  It's a fun way to spend an afternoon or evening and it's also a great way to meet other 4-H families!!  You just might even get to work with me (HAHA).

Be sure to RSVP for the awards banquet if you plan on attending. If you received a letter for a record book award, don't forget to complete them and turn them in by the deadline!
