🍀GIVE BIG to Gallatin County 4-H Foundation!🍀

2024 GIVE BIG Gallatin Valley Event: May 2nd - 3rd

Gallatin County 4-H Foundation will be a part of the 2024 Give Big Gallatin Valley event.  This event is a unique and fun way to give to local Gallatin Valley non-profits. Gallatin County 4-H Foundation is one of the many non-profits that are taking part.

What is Give Big?

It is 24 hours of community members, friends, and families near and far donating to their favorite non-profits.  It is an online giving platform so anyone anywhere can log in and donate.  It was created as a fun and useful way for non-profits to have a platform to receive donations.

Why Give Big?

The funds that the Gallatin County 4-H Foundation raises will go towards supporting new projects and new clubs, scholarships to attend Montana 4-H Congress, the 4-H ambassador program, and higher education scholarships for Gallatin 4-H youth.

How can you Give Big?

Starting at 6pm on Thursday, May 2nd 4-H supporters can go to https://www.givebiggv.org/.../gallatin-county-4-h-foundation to donate. The event ends just 24 hours later at 6pm on Friday, May 3rd.  Donors can also stop by the 4-H Extension office and donate in person!

Help us spread the word! View and SHARE our 4-H Give Big Facebook posts with friends, family, and co-workers: https://www.facebook.com/GallatinCounty4H/.

We also hope that our 4-H Families will consider donating. Any amount is appreciated and will make an impact on the future success of our youth program. The real success of  Give Big Gallatin Valley will not be how much money we raise but the tremendous impact those dollars will have when nonprofits across our community put them to work!

ANNOUNCEMENT: New Sunday Schedule

The 4-H/FFA Livestock Areas will now be closed to the public on the last Sunday (07/21) of the 2024 Big Sky Country State Fair. Trucks, semis and trailers will be moving through the livestock areas throughout the day, so to ensure the safety and wellbeing of the general public, exhibitors, and animals, the areas will be closed off from the rest of the Fair.

For mutual benefit of the Fairgrounds and 4-H/FFA exhibitors, Sunday will now become a processor load-out and barn clean-up day. 4-H/FFA market animals that are sold through the Market Livestock Sale are terminal projects intended for meat consumption. At the request of the meat processors, animals are to be transported to their final destinations beginning Sunday morning. All other 4-H/FFA animals will be released from Fair intermittently throughout Sunday at the discretion of each species.

Exhibitors are still required to be at the Fairgrounds for this day, as they are expected to care for their animals until release, help clean barns and assist species committees.

4-H/FFA families with reserved RV camping spots will be permitted to move onto the Fairgrounds beginning on Saturday, July 13th. All RVs must be in place by no later than Monday, July 15th at 6pm. RVs will be allowed to leave the grounds at any time starting Sunday, July 21st with attention to livestock transport trailers and load-out schedules.

  • Interviews: During the Project Interviews prior to Fair, a judge will evaluate members on their interview skills (eye contact, confidence, attire, ability to answer questions), their 4-H Year experience and project knowledge utilizing an interview rubric. This will be your Project Interview score.
  • Composite Score: The Record Book score (max points = 82) and the Project Interview score (max points = 48) will be totaled together for a Composite Score (max points = 130).
    • Members with a Composite Score of 105 points (80% or higher) will get nominated to be considered for a Project Award. Those nominated will be asked to re-turn in their completed Record Books in September for final review. Project Awards are presented at the end-of-year Awards Banquet.

UNLIMITED LEADERS COUNCIL (ULC)

ULC meets the first Tuesday of every month, with our next meeting on

May 7th at 6pm at the Extension Office.

The monthly meeting of the Gallatin County 4-H Unlimited Leaders Council was held on April 2nd at the Extension Office.

Two funding requests in the amount of $100 each were approved for 4-H members to attend the 4-H Rec Lab in Boulder, MT.

Our new heat press has arrived and soon clubs, projects and 4-H camp leaders will be able to use it to place their own logos on shirts. Joey Knappenberger is working on setup and will assist in training others to use the press. ULC approved the purchase of a 4-H clover template/logo to get us started.

ULC acknowledged all the work that staff has put into the updated 4-H Fairbook and encourages families to read it carefully and take special note of significant schedule changes from last year.

Molly Yurdana is seeking intermittent chaperones to assist during State 4-H Congress (July 9-12). Please contact Molly if you can help, even if just for a part of Congress.

ULC discussed and approved a change in the allocation of Cloverbud enrollment fees. Recognizing that fundraising activities are a unique challenge to our youngest members, ULC will designate half of the annual $20 enrollment fee to the Cloverbud project to support their activities and events throughout the year. Both current year and next year’s Cloverbud enrollment fees are subject to this new funding allocation.

ULC spent considerable time discussing and brainstorming around the Fairgrounds concession stand issue. A water leak in the concession stand resulted in damage that revealed the presence of asbestos when repairs were initiated. The Fairgrounds halted repairs due to high remediation costs, and their long-term plans for the facility. As a result, the concession stand is not available during fair week and may not be available in future years. While many ideas were discussed, a solution that meets the needs of the 4-H community, and complies with food preparation regulations has not yet been identified.

The ULC is still seeking a vice president to serve the remainder of the current 4-H year and president beginning in October.

AMBASSADORS / TEEN LEADERSHIP **new leader this year!

Recap of April Meeting:

  • At the April Teen Leadership Meeting (04/16) members received their Ambassador Polos!! We practiced our 4-H “elevator pitches” which will come in handy when meeting new people at state events, promoting our program to the public and pitching to sponsors/donors/buyers. We spent some time reflecting on our “burdens and blessings” and the importance of shifting our mindset from “I have to” to “I get to” as leaders. The meeting concluded with the best team “building” activity to put our leadership, teamwork and communication skills together (thank you for your help building our new storage room shelves)!!

TO DO:

  • Narrow down your Leadership Plan of Action (Leadership Plan of Action - Montana 4H - Montana State University Extension | Montana State University) – this is the “point” or the culmination of the Montana 4-H Ambassador program and our Teen Leadership project this year. I challenge each of you to create (at the very least) a poster or tri-fold display of your Leadership Plan of Action to display at this year’s Fair. This could show what you are planning to do, have done already, or just on the topic you’re thinking of focusing on (ex. importance of community service, or on a topic we have covered in Teen Leaders this year). Think of what you want your impact as a county leader to be!

BAKING  **new leaders this year!

We will meet at the MSU Food Lab, Herrick Hall Room #120, located on S. 7th Avenue on the 1st Monday of each month at 6 PM. Please be watching for an email reminder each month.

Our LAST meeting will be:

5/6/24

**If there are any questions in your mind regarding record books, submitting baked items to the fair, registering for the fair or how judging and interviews will work....PLEASE, as a parent, stick around the meeting for the first 10ish minutes of the meeting so we can review some of these items.

I will likely hold a baking record book help session towards the beginning of June for those that need help!

Until then, here are a few things to think on:

*Fair registration opens May 20th and will be open for about a month

*You must complete and turn in a record book (due to the 4-H office on 6/26) to be able to bring items to the fair.

*The Fair is a great way to showcase your baking skills, your record books are a great life lesson in record keeping, reflecting on what you learned and budgeting.

I am always here for questions while Katie and Krista do an amazing job coming up with recipes and shopping for the ingredients!

If you have any questions, please contact Erin at (ehagmeier@gmail.com email) or text 406-461-7205

    COOKING

April was a busy month for the Cooking Project!  At our monthly meeting, we made corn/flour tortillas from scratch.  Who knew how easy that was?!  And absolutely delicious!  We then made some yummy taco fillings and enjoyed our delicious tortillas.  The shape and thickness definitely takes some practice when forming by hand, but the flavor was so good.

After that, we met a few times to organize and assemble dehydrated soup jars for our first annual fundraiser.  There was a lot of work that went into these, so thank you to each member and parent that took the time to help.  There are three varieties of soup for sale; Friendship Soup, 3 Bean Chili, and Pasta Fagioli Soup for $15 each.  Please contact a project member or myself if you would like to support our project and purchase a wholesome and delicious meal made by hard-working 4-H members & volunteers!

Then, to celebrate all of our hard work, we took an amazing field trip to the La Chatelaine Chocolat Co. to learn all about how French artisan chocolates are made.  The owner, Mr. Wlady Grochowski, graciously gave us a tour of the chocolate making facility and educated us on the science that is chocolate.  Each member got to take home some exquisite treats, and we ate dinner together.  It was such a great learning experience and so much fun!

Our next meeting is scheduled for May 21st, 5:30 - 8:30 pm, at the MSU food lab, room #120 in Herrick Hall, located on S. 7th Avenue off of W. Cleveland.  We will be making sushi at this meeting!  Our friend, Mr. Ryder Usher, will be bringing some choice ingredients, and each member will get to roll their own sushi.  You will receive a Signup Genius email before the meeting to sign up.  Please RSVP so that we can plan accordingly.  Hope to see you all there!

One very important component to being a 4-H member is community service, so I have reached out to the HRDC about volunteering opportunities with our favorite topic... food!   We are going to schedule one Tuesday after school to meet at the HRDC Community Commons to volunteer our time in the Gallatin Valley Food Bank.  We will be helping with can sorting and/or food repackaging.  This is a wonderful opportunity to give back to our community!  Look out for the Doodle Poll with the available dates to narrow down.
